Still expected a better room editor...  Shrug
And I still don't know if its worth to fork-of 25$ for this. I may buy it for reability sake though.

What? They still have the same terrible room editor?  Facepalm
Is the upgrade from GM7 free? If not, I'll pass on this one.

I did buy it this year! I had the Lite version before and upgraded when I hit its limits (which was fairly shortly after I got "serious" with GML). So free upgrade for me!  Beer!

Probably won't buy it and continue to use 7.

So, what's new?
This article explains it all very nicely:

# Speed Improvements

Only this caught my attention, but then again, I doubt it's a big improvement.

Upgraded just now, can't say anything about the speed improvements, but the trigger events are a nice addition. Other than that, I don't get why they invested so much in improving the sprite editor when most people use external graphics programs anyway but left the room editor as it is.  WTF

Trigger event can be made simply by this:

Code:
if x happens
 {
  etc
 }

I don't see why they made a new thing just for this.

B-b-but I was promised that I'd never have to pay for updates like 5 years ago...

After reading through the changes list, I declare this update to be a joke. "Trigger events"? Please. The only notable thing to come from this is alpha transparency, which should have been put in a long time ago. It's ludicrous that they're charging $25 for a feature which has been a staple of basic modern 2D games for a while.

Let us move on to better things; Game Maker is done.

Bah humbug, I say. No native support for .MP3, .ogg or .mod files. You'd think the number of games being produced with external sound .dlls (such as supersound.dll) would have been a bit of a clue that people want and need this. On the other hand, user-configurable text colours in the code editor? whoo bloody hoo.  Roll Eyes

I get the feeling that the trouble is that the features longtime users and experienced GML coders would like are very different from the kind of features that yoyo thinks will attract new customers, and they're concentrating on the latter. Which might rake in more cash in the short term but won't do them much good if the core user-base dies off.

Maybe they should sell two versions. I'd seriously pay £50 ($80) for a version of GM with all th e features I'd like in it.

I'd have to pay again for this? No thanks.

I haven't been following it, but did they go with that logo?

None of the improvements strikes me as terribly important. Certainly nothing worth paying again for.

Also:  what the fuck is it with the community and voting YES to softwrap?  I can't even use the pro version without being on the internet, which blows when I'm trying to whip up something when I'm traveling.

Wait, you have to be online to use the pro version?

Yikes, Game Maker really dropped the ball on this wall.  I agree that the whole not changing the room editing thing was a huge mistake.

Too bad, it looks like I won't be upgrading to 8.0...

What's this?  GameMaker not worth it?  Pointless and money-grubbing, you say?

Honestly, the biggest actual improvement might be that now it supports those nice hi-res Vista+ icons, so our games won't look like relics of Win98 age anymore.

I tested the speed improvements before and I must admit they were quite significant in places.

Alpha channels should be available since years ago. Wait, they actually were, just only for external resources (which I guess everyone serious used anyway). Still, it's an improvement. Too bad they did the stupid shit and changed syntax for the resource loading functions. Have fun with making your old games work on GM8  Angry.

The rest of the changes are meh. Not a big update overall, but I'll still buy it eventually.

EDIT: oh, and the new code editor is way better too.
