there are good parts and bad parts, but they reduced healing at all levels except the last few, made armor higher but made it last less than half the time, and made the healing coefficient 0.9 instead of 1, so overall i'd say it's worse for how i play as her. i never really noticed or used the armor boost of the heal spell, and since that's the only part that got stronger (even as it got much shorter) i'm not sure how to use that. 80 additional armor is lot, but if it only lasts for 3 seconds, you have to time it exactly right in order for it to be of benefit. and her level 1 healing was already weak as it was, making it heal 60 now for a character whose primary function is to heal seems cruel; health regen probably heals someone more than 60 in the time it takes to recharge the heal spell at level 1.

@paul: i don't see any advantages as strictly support that soraka has over sona but maybe i've missed something. sona is also much easier to use effectively at a basic level. have you tried using her? she's free this rotation i think i used to play soraka a lot, but she got nerfed a good bit, intervening locket was removed, lots of people take ignite... i've pretty much given up on her. i've heard some of the devs say that they think people just aren't using starfall/call (whichever it is, i think i am combining wc3 and lol) in an effective manner. but i agree that all the laning changes were a big buff to all supports I just played a few matches with my friends yesterday where one of them was playing soraka and constantly got scores like
4/0/16 12/0/26 2/2/10
and they constantly refer to what happened to soraka as a buff and according to how he's been playing with her, it kind of is so i mean yeah
i played all zeals zelian against a bunch of bad people before and got a bunch of kills i've seen an eve buy six sunfire capes and dominate people i've seen dps vlads sparkle off the edges of the tannhauser gate

yeah i have sona too, she's pretty good but i don't like her as much as soraka for various reasons: aestietic reasons, that sona's heals are weaker (but more frequent) and untargeted, that sona's abilities in general are untargeted, and that she can't heal mana (soraka's most unique characteristic is that she can heal people's mana).
sona is better if your team has very few characters with mana, but soraka + a mage (like zilean in particular) is very powerful because her ability to give the mage infinite mana is not something sona can do.

and i've wrecked as ad swain, ap taric(which is honestly just hilarious), and tank fiddlesticks but that's not the point if it was just one isolated match i would understand, but it was 4 matches in a row, including a loss where he was still doing amazing as soraka after the patch. so yeah, you can call it a nerf if you want, but maybe you just need to open yourself up to different ways of playing soraka to see it as a buff

that suggestion would be more helpful with some hints about these different ways, or hints about how he plays as her. besides, the nerf was small enough that it doesn't affect things *that much* (beyond the early game) so people who are good with her will continue to be, just slightly less good. i played as her yesterday and got like 4/1/12 or something too, but i didn't notice any benefit from the armor increase at all (just noticed less of an ability to heal at the start of the game).

the armor buff is pretty substantial. Seems like they really want her to be paired with a carry against a team that does a lot of physical damage.
It's seems a little too specific but I suppose in that situation it would be nuts.

it's substantial but remember that it only lasts for 3 seconds now: so it's about twice as much armor, but over a 3 second period rather than an 8 second period, so you have to time your heal *right* before they're hit by an attack for it to even be worthwhile (and it only raises physical armor, not magic armor, so it's useless when fighting against champions that fight primarily with abilities rather than their physical attack).
this kind of makes little sense to me, because typically you heal someone after they're hurt, not before. so either you heal them when they don't need it to give them 3 seconds of armor when it'd be useful or heal them when they do need it and after they don't need the armor anymore. the uses of the spell seem to contradict each other.

The heal is for team fights, of course. When the enemy physical DPS drops in and starts doing damage, you heal the first damage on the tank, giving him awesome survivability for 4 seconds. With 40% CDR you have a CD of 6 seconds on your heal, you there's really not that much downtime in the armor.
Against casters you use infuse. It's a bit more tricky because you have to get closer to the fight, but silence works wonders in a team fight.
Wish and summoner's heal once the teamfight has gone on for a while, obviously. Make sure to always have enough mana for your wish if it's not on cooldown.
On Soraka, build auras (synergy with passive) and CDR mainly (infuse is free). Maybe mana, not sure how much of that is needed after the new patch, but you'll want the soul shroud anyway. After that, you maybe can build some AP if you have more gold (using starcall it's easy to get assists), but armor or MR are more important if they have good gankers. Boots of swiftness help if you need to help out someone being ganked or if you need to get closer for starcall or infuse.
I think focusing too much on AP is the mistake most often made with Soraka. The reduction to a 0.9 ratio for your heal should make that even clearer.

i have cool down reduction runes which start me with 27.xx% cdr, i then get the boots of lucidity to get 37.xx% (which is near enough to 40% that the difference doesn't matter much). after that i usually get rod of ages (so i don't die immediately because everyone good targets healers first) and rylai's sceptor (for health and to slow enemies when i silence them). getting aura items is an interesting idea, i may try that.

wait you're right: it's 22% and the boots bring it to 37%. but yes 22% is a lot: i have *everything* in cooldown for my runes and masteries (some level 2 runes instead of level 3 though so there's still room for increasing it a little bit more).

I feel that buying level 2 runes is a bit of a waste. If you want to try a new type of rune page, level 1 runes are very cheap and give about half the bonus of a level 3 rune. And if you want to max out your bonuses, it's easier to just go straight to level 3's instead of buying 1, 2 and 3 in that order.

Akali is one of those champs that you'd have to try really hard to not kill people with. Sometimes if you sneeze when there are enemies nearby you accidentally get a double kill. I guess that's why people are so fond of getting snowball items on her. I saw one once who had full Soulstealer, Sword and Leviathan at the same time; it was frightening to say the least.

so, opinions on the new champ?
Maybe I haven't seen anyone play well with her but she hasn't really posed much of a threat to me.
Also the patch really benefited renekton, my kdr is at least doubled since. I thought the healing nerf would be worse than it actually is.

Yes, Renekthon as solid early game now. I still wish Slice and Dice did more damage, but I guess it's to be used mainly as a gap closer and farming tool. Pulling ouf his W+Q is sweet.
I haven't seen any Karma's as a threat. Seen her more as a support. Her Shield seems good and there's some nice gameplay to be had. But since she as no ult, she's got no actual teeth to become a good ap mage.
