COPTRA is a retro and hardcore arena shooter, in which you play a rocking helicopter pilot in an ambush.

Use deadly powerups, your crazy reflexes and cunning intelligence to survive attacks and get a score as high as possible.
Lovely music by Jabberwock.

Haha, pacifist mode is a nice touch, though I can't score very high that way.

Great game.

It's a cool game, but I really think it'd be better if the planes started out a bit slower and then accelerated to full speed over a second or so.  Right now, going anywhere near the edge of the screen to grab a power-up is just begging to be insta-gibbed by a plane out of nowhere.

Why does the game keep defaulting to joypad controls? The only thing I have attached to this computer is a USB Sega Saturn pad with only a D-Pad (no analog sticks) and it doesn't work correctly with this game.

How do I make it use mouse and WSAD? I don't want to disconnect the D-Pad since it's tangled up behind my computer and pulling it out is a pain.

I tried pressing b but that does nothing.

You really nailed the aesthetics here; the chunky graphics serve the game well and Jabberwock's music is (as always) top-notch. I'm terrible at these sort of games and can't get past thirty kills, but this is pretty fun stuff. I really dig the homages to Contra's powerups by the way. I'm going to add this to my backlog of games that are in dire need of review.

This is awesome, but I can't get it to work on either of my computers using my 360 controller, and the action is too fast for mousing IMO.  Anyone else having trouble getting a controller to work?

I like it a lot, but there a couple of things.
1) As Derek said on the front page, bombs should look different than the other powerups.
2) I would make the non-white portions of the reticle be transparent
3) The outer boundary should actually be the outer boundary.
4) I would add a control scheme that allows for only the keyboard, like arrow keys for movement and WASD would act as fire controls.  I would find that easier than the arrows and mouse.

love the music and visuals!  I too can only score about 30 points, I think 34 was my max.  Main cause of death: really fast, explosion colored bullets fired by tanks that require more than 1 hit to kill, requiring you to stay in the path of the explosion colored bullets for more than a split second.  90% of deaths after i got the basic "stay in the middle and aim" thing down was from explosion colored bullets.

i don't like explosion colored bullets!  still found this oddly addictive, and the stacking powerups are an absolute blast.  just didn't like explosion colored bullets.

One word: addictive!
The game gives that kind of feeling that you can make it better next time Smiley
But I agree that it would be nice to make distinguishable bombs and other powerups.
My best score is 76.
Most frequent cause of death - plane when I'm near border of arena...
Or when I pick something like spread+laser+missiles, it's
really hard to see bullets Smiley

Well, I'm a fan.
I love that the game gives you tips on how to not die next time,
I love the "Every other line" look (Whatever that's called)
I love that you die on one hit, with no life counter. More games should do that, makes you care more.
I love stacking powerups!

This thing would have been awesome in an arcade circa 1985
