The Slate will have 5 hours of battery, be heavier, and the 32 gb model will be only 50$ cheaper than the 32gb ipad.
In other words, fail.
A tablet needs an OS that was made specfically for a touch based interface. I believe that if the iPad has serious concurrents in the months to come, it'll be from the android side.
Also, prices need to be lower. It makes sense for people to choose a 500$ laptop over a 1000$ macbook, if the hardware is the same. Or a 200$ phone over a 400$ iPhone. But a 550$ tablet instead of a 600$ iPad? I don't see it.

chrknudsen and allen: My quote: Of course the ipad and the iphone aren't the same thing, but a lot of people(including me) will use them for the same purposes. Taken from the wikipedia page on the iPad: Similar in functionality to the smaller, less powerful iPhone or iPod touch (...) Do I need to draw you a picture ?

I think you're still missing the point. The iPad is: 1. Not a phone. 2. Nowhere near as portable as the other two iTouch devices.
It's a bit like saying people are gonna stop playing their PSPs because of the PS3.

I lol'd. Well said, Sinclair. Sorry about the 30/130 confusion. That's ridiculous to make something with a monthly cost have such a higher tag. Well, I'm definitely not getting that! If I could use the same 3G my iPhone uses, it might be a different story; but it doesn't. Does anyone with one of these have any feedback? I really want to know how the gaming feels. Is it the most amazing thing you've ever experienced, or is it difficult and unintuitive with the touch controls?

I think a true test of how comparable the two are would be to see how far you could skip each one across a lake.
Personally, I think the iPad's greater surface area would help it skip further.

And to clarify, I wasn't going to buy the iPhone to use it like any other mobile phone. I already have a better phone that I carry daily, which was the reason why I didn't buy the iPhone before. I think this also answers the portable part.

The issues for me would mostly be weight, size and convenience, since I already have a desktop computer. When my laptop bites it (presumably any day now since sometimes the screen randomly goes dark for no reason), I'll be looking for something convenient to read and write assignments on.
I liked the look of this Notion Ink Adam video I watched the other day: video: http://gizmodo.com/5471559/notion-ink-adam-tablet-caught-on-video-specs-finalizedhands-on review: http://www.slashgear.com/notion-ink-adam-hands-on-0969281/* Android * Pixel Qi screen (LCD, or low-power e-ink-like display for working outside, etc.) * 3 MP camera * trackpad (interestingly, on the back of the device) * 15 hours battery

Naw, it looks like it uses a custom UI; it's just built on Windows 7, apparently.
It's unfortunate that Apple products are so well designed and such a joy to use, because I'd really prefer to get an iPad than another, equivalent version. It's just a shame that they're so evil.

Was that in the video? The articles I've read were talking about Android 2+. edit: this is interesting:

Indeed. All touch screens that aren't on an apple product tend to lack the same responsiveness, which really bums me. I'd love to see an equivalent Android product with the same value. I really would.

People keep adorating closed standards, and then they go complaining.

Touchpad!? Why? What does Bluetooth (US Edition) mean? What is the native storage size? What is the SD Card limit?

Yeah, thanks, grandpa. Those kids today! I really like the feel and general design of Apple's stuff, but I don't like their closed platforms. There's no conflict here.
