Hostile aliens invade Xebulon 5, and it's up to one @ to stop them!

ASCIIshmup is a game Pentaclam has been working on for about a month. It's pretty self explanatory. It's a shmup that's ASCII. There's not much to describe, so go play it.

Suggestions and criticism is appreciated, and some ideas will be added to the next version.

This is quite entertaining, but the lack of horizontal movement makes it pretty brutal too. Fun times, though; glad to see what you've been working on after all this time. Still can't beat the first bit but it will not be long Noir.

I also couldn't get past the first bit. I loved the illusion of parallax scrolling :D I found the use of 3 credits kind of weird though. If I died at the beginning I felt compelled to suicide 2 times so I wouldn't be handicapped later.

I don't understand the trend of ASCII games. Pixellated games were nice, so there's a bit of nostalgy involved. But when have ASCII games ever been good? The only ones I remember are the ones I had bothered to typed in basic from computer mags (you know, the ones that never worked the first time & required you to double-check the thousands of poke's you had typed). I don't miss them.

Am I right that the game also isn't really in textmode btw? Anyway, it's ok-ish for what it is.

So, Glyph and I are planning on releasing v1.1 soon. We need a little feedback and suggestions.

make the difficulty ramp up, not just start out REALLY hard. I want to play it but I can't get more then 10 seconds into it.

Yeah, that 3 is barely possible to beat. It shoots way too fast and has a @$%& tonne of life! The game is more about trial-and-error when it's like this. Unless, you do only have 15 seconds made that is. Smiley

It's got that ASCII charm to it. Nice music, nice dialogue, great work.

If you struggle on the first level, there is a surprise for you.

There are three. And the first one is easy compared to the second, which wipes me out almost immediately.

I like the style of this game. Would be nice to see it in full-screen too or something a little larger.

Although I didn't really like how the explosions and ship colour are the same, or the alternating bullet colour. Makes it more confusing, but if a lack of clarity is your goal then you've definitely achieved it.

Thanks for the input Smiley.

The difficulty has been slightly decreased in v1.1. I don't think anyone has beat this game yet.

I like the aesthetics of ASCII graphics, but regardless, you can't ignore the fact that it's a hell of a lot easier to do an ascii game than to draw even semi-decent looking graphics (if you are a programmer that is not interested in doing graphics, anyway).

Using it let you focus on the gameplay and programming, which are enough work as it is.

Exactly, I can imagine most programmers aren't artists. Or have a best-friend artist that's willing to draw a game's worth of art for free. I may make an ASCII game next.

Oh and the new difficulty, however slight, is much better.
