Dissipate is a puzzle platformer based around "proverbs & sayings." THIS GAME IS HARD. Before the start of each level a  proverb/saying is shown. The level will then begin. The only way to figure out how to reach the exit, whether it be the door or not, is in the proverb. Look over the proverb, write it down. It is your only way of getting out alive. This game was coded over the February 19th-21st weekend over a period of 18 total hours. Graphics, Coding, and Sound effects all created by me. The background music is by freeplaysounds, and is ROYALTY FREE.

     If you become stuck in any level, Press R to restart. This will also show you the proverb again. Look it over, and try to figure out how to solve each level.



     This game was created for the GameJolt Weekend Jam.

It's an interesting concept, but I sometimes found myself find the exit of a level not really understanding how to do it. You know, blind luck. Some are pretty clever, while others could probably use better solutions. I got stuck on the one with the three spiked pillars that move towards you.

Also, why not have the proverb always displayed on an area of the screen where it doesn't obstruct the player's view of the level, so he doesn't have to restart in order to read it again?

The platforming felt decent, but in my opinion could be better. It seemed like the jump wouldn't respond well on the edges, and it was a bit too fast. I often found myself falling down pits that should be easy to jump over.

I didn't find the game hard at all, most of the proverbs translated literally into what I had to do in game.

I also found the solution to a couple of the levels without understanding.

I would've preferred slower controls, like Melly I found that I fell down pits that could have been easy to jump over.

I think I finished the game though (did it end on the screen with three lines and no visuals?)

Hanks for playing guys. Please take into account I only made this is 18 hours. However, I'll be make a sequel-ish to this, but I'll make sure to take all your suggestions into consideration. The controls have all ready been fixed up. I'll add a button to view the proverb during gameplay.

Any particular reason for a button? Having it always displayed at, say, the top of the screen like Melly said would achieve a better effect without an extra button.

Good luck on the (sequel-ish?) remake!

The only thing Im concerned about would be it taking up too much space that might be needed for visibilty, and looking sloppy/scrunched. However, I think if I made the screen 800x600 instead of 640x480 I could save the excess bottom 200 px to have a slot for Stage number and Proverb. That are would of course be highlighted with a backgroun/black to seperate it. Would this be a good idea? And thanks. I'll be sure to post the sequel here.

You could always just have it move relative to the player. Like, if the player is in the top half of the screen, the proverb displays on the bottom of the screen, and if they're in the bottom half of the screen, the proverb displays on the top.

That... Makes sense. Should it like Disspear and the reappear so it moves fluently, or just switch when the player moves?

I try you game and I feel exactly the same as Melly. That not very practical when it comes to jump on the edges. When you said the control has been fixed up, it didn't look very different on this point.

The idea of one proverb = one puzzle/level is really nice. I was wondering how do you proceed when you create a level : do you think to a proverb, then you design a level from this thought, or do you think about a level, then fin a good line to sum up the result? (Sometimes I feel that the link between the quote and the level wasn't good - e.g.: "Good man have to die but...").

About displaying the proverb on-screen at all time; I think you should just try the different ways of displaying it and choosing the one you like the most (personally I think one that moves wouldn't function as well as a static one, you might as well devote a fixed amount of screen space. But I haven't seen either / you might think differently)

@ Everyone. This game wont be improved. Sorry, however, all these control bugs, and everything you stated are being/have been fixed in a new game/sequel to this. So be ready for that when It's released.

@Marmaduke- I'm going to try the stationary one. I'll post some images in this thread of what they look like once I do so.

EDIT: New Image. I really like it. New way to always display, and the font is much better.

I like this concept, it vaguely reminds me of Warioware... I don't think you need the "This game is hard" disclaimer, because it really isn't that tough of a platformer.

I'm wondering, why not have "W" for jump? all you do is run and jump, and usually we do this with one hand...

The levels themselves are pretty clever, I'm amazed at how much game you got done in your 18 hours.

I like your new UI mockup there. Oooh, just had a thought: You could even have the proverb scrawled on the wall in grafitti... that'd be pretty awesome. But yeah, that looks very clean, though it could probably take less space on the screen, If the proverbs are short enough, maybe In a bar accross the top like Dungeon...

The proverbs are uually one long sentence, or two. Some are short. So not sure where to go with that. However, thanks so much for playing. It got review on GMB by NAL, and Im proud to saythat he found it unique enough compared to other puzzle platformers to be somewhat worthwile. The new games levels will be much more tricky. So watch out.
