Yes, it's something that you can choose to inflict upon your players if you so choose (actually the same theory applies to normal Flash applications as well, see http://www.mochimedia.com ). I lowered myself to including a start-of-game one in my example SWF game, and have earned 14 cents for my trouble.

I would have thought there was a digital download now (as the Flash plugin itself is one, but I don't see one either...

Having an ad the start of the game is hardly "lowering" yourself. Personally, I definitely think having inter-level ads is taking it too far though.

Yeah, I agree. Mochi is pretty cool, and their leaderboard system in particular is handy. If you have a decent size portfolio of flash games or one of your games goes viral you'd be glad of including an ad.
Interlevel ads on a fucking memory game with twenty second long levels is another matter.

Edit: Wait... DavidN? Wong?

Well, that's good to know that they're not instantly reviled - I wasn't sure how the independent games community would react to them. Certainly, if I'd had the foresight to include one in my prototype Flash game that became mildly popular, I may have earned enough to buy myself a mildly more expensive lunch for a couple of days.
