Soldat Entertainment will soon release their(/his?) next action-RPG(/Diablo-like/dungeon crawler) Din's Curse, and I just noticed that there's a demo now:
http://www.soldak.com/Dins-Curse/Demo.htmlI still didn't get around to buying Depths of Peril, but after initially mistaking it for a generic Diablo clone, I really grew to love the demo for the great strategy elements. I didn't like the follow-up game Kivi's Underworld, a seemingly much simpler and linear hack and slay.
Now, Din's Curse again looks interesting for an even stronger emphasis on dynamic in the gameplay. Quests actually have an impact on the game world, like when you are asked to rescue a hostage and take to long, that person might get killed, or if you fail to kill a specific enemy in time he might start an uprising.
Also, there apparently are a lot of possibilities for random unscripted things happening. For example two monsters which are hostile to each other might randomly meet in the dungeon, start to fight and break an explosive barrel in the process. This then explodes, destroys an adjacent support column, thus causes a cave-in, which kills both monsters and blocks the path. All happening without any action by the player.
But, I'm still not sure if that's enough for me, as Depths of Peril also had a lot of that dynamic, at least in the quests, and had all the strategy and tribe interaction, which Din's Curse doesn't have.
Has anyone else tried the demo or even pre-ordered it? Just don't make the same mistake I did with Depths of Peril and think of Din's Curse as being just a generic clone, give it a little time
