I was thinking of getting Theaterhythm, but only after I clear my unfinished game cache. It looks like there's equipment and levels in the game? I don't really understand how it works, unless that's all just window dressing and doesn't really impact the game.

Behind the music-based gameplay, a battle or walking through a world happens. How well you do in the song determines how much damage you do to enemies or how far you get through the world (the world wraps around fairly often, it's just a bit of scenery from whatever the game in question is).

Levelling up, choosing abilities and equipping items (only one at a time and they're gone once used, like potions or whatever), helps you to defeat more enemies or travel further, which award better items. The only impact this really has on gameplay is that you can equip a potion or something and your health will last longer - useful for getting through songs on Ultimate difficulty, when you're a beginner. I think raising your luck stat helps you to find the items that unlock new characters.

All that stuff is mostly inconsequential though I think. So far I've just chosen four characters and haven't levelled any of the others up at all. Not caring about that stuff doesn't stop you getting an S rank on any given song.

Any time, really. I'm pretty sure the price won't be dropping when the XL comes out.

Yeah, but name some games to convince me.

Anything from my collection is recommendable:
- Super Street Fighter IV
- Dead or Alive Dimensions
- Super Mario 3D Land
- Mario Kart 7
- Shinobi (probably my favorite 3DS game, really challenging classic Ninja Gaiden-like game)
- Samurai Warriors Chronicles
- Tetris Axis
- Cave Story 3D
- Ridge Racer 3D

Except:
- Pokémon Rumble Blast
Which I'd only recommend if you don't mind a Pokémon flavored, very simplistic Gauntlet-like game.

Also:
- BlazBlue CS II (somewhat of a lazy port, but 3D looks nice)
- Tekken 3D Prime Edition (lacks single player content, but it's portable Tekken 6)
- Crush 3D
- Shifting World (has some control issues)
- Mario Tennis Open
- Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked
- Tales of The Abyss
- StarFox 64 3D
- The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D
- Residen Evil: Revelations
- Kid Icarus: Uprising
- Nano Assault (great looking shmup)
- Ghost Recon (not a shooter, it's an Advance Wars-ish tactics game and can be found for real cheap)
- Lego Batman 2 (surprisingly decent)
- Heroes of Ruin (decent Diablo-like)
- Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy
- Theatrhythm Final Fantasy
- Rhythm Thief

eShop (3DSWare):
- Mutant Mudds (best game on the eShop in my opinion)
- Pushmo
- Mighty Switch Force
- Sakura Samurai
- Dark Void Zero (DSiWare)
- Bomb Monkey
- Freakyforms (character creation is fun)
- VVVVVV

eShop (VC):
- Donkey Kong '94
- The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
- Bionic Commando
- Blaster Master: Enemy Below
- BurgerTime Deluxe
- Catrap
- Super Mario Land 1&2
- Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters
- Gargoyle's Quest

And well, the upcoming games:
- Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance
- Paper Mario: Sticker Star
- Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
- Epic Mickey: The Power of Illusion (2D pixel art platformer like Castle of Illusion)
- Code of Princess
- Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing Transformed (can't help it, I like Mario Kart clones)
- Fire Emblem: Awakening
- Professor Layton
- Castlevania: Mirror of Fate
- New Super Mario Bros. 2

Well, I had a list but that pretty much covers everything. I'd say if there's anything close to a "killer app" it's Kid Icarus. That game blew me out of the water.

Awesome man! Thx, for taking your time writing the list. Smiley

Looking at the list I'm only kind of interested in:

- Super Mario 3D Land
- Mario Kart 7
- The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D
- Pushmo
- Paper Mario: Sticker Star
- Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
- Fire Emblem: Awakening

Is the 3DS good at running original DS games as well?

Yep! Some games are even improved by using the circle pad, like Super Mario 64.

The only issue with DS games on 3DS is that the 3DS has higher resolution, so you can play them with their native resolution like this:

Crisp and pixel-perfect, but smaller screen.

Or like this:

Fits the screen, but is a bit soft/blurry due to stretching.

I play all my DS games on 3DS with the second option.

Hold select or start when booting up a game. Also works for VC games.

lol wat

playing 3D games with a dpad isn't always a good idea, at least in my opinion.

Examples? Sonic 3D Blast. Super Mario 64 DS is.... eh with the dpad, but Tanner is right, it's a bit better with the circle pad.
