Name drop in the XCom thread My prediction on the following posts is at least 30% "RUINED FOREVER", 40-50% "Let's all see how it turns out mates', and 30-40% misc.

Well, they've earned my trust with Bioshock 2, but history tells us that any X-Com game that veered to far from the original concept pretty much sucked. Time will tell if history is to be repeated!

Well, they were planning a Squad based X-Com, and I was sad that it was canceled. I pretty much want a good open world FPS. Farcry 2 was close, but it had issues.

OOOOOoooooo now I am excited. Also. 4 years? Yikes. (And still going...When did Farbs leave, at least a year ago, right?) Triple-A development takes too damn long.

How about turning the Civilization franchise into a FPS next? The only thing that could redeem this is if the levels (mission maps) are randomly generated. If they toss any sort of linear elements in, in disfavor of the sandbox feel of the originals, it will suck. Just another run of the mill FPS, except set in the xcom universe, and with some strategy elements grafted to it. On the other hand, Fallout 3 wasnt half bad (though it really isnt a typical FPS).

Can't wait for X-COM: Kart Racing!
Also, knowing 2K, I'm excited for the poor PC port.

I actually have Enforcer somewhere. In the attic, I think. Anyway, I was always more interested in the "research and planning" than the rest of it. As long as that's good, I'll be happy. The only thing that could redeem this is if the levels (mission maps) are randomly generated.
I once created a semi-random Deus Ex level. (Deus Ex used the Unreal engine.) The idea was that there was a series of doors; when the level was loaded, random numbers were chosen to close some of the doors and open others. The pattern of closed and open doors made the layout different every time you played it. (Well, there were only about 12 layouts, but you get the idea.)

Not sure how to feel about this, I'll be part of the "lets see how it turns out" statistic. Also, I want to say that Kotaku misreported by tacking "shooter" after "first person" especially since they mention resource and squad management. First person doesnt imply that all you'll be doing is mindless shooting. Of course I'm only speculating, but there are implications of pseudo-turn-based combat via pausing ala Mass Effect/KOTOR.
Unfortunately, AAA games take a lot of time and money to make and it doesnt make business sense to make a game only a niche audience will like (tactical turn based strategy). You can argue that they should've left X-Com alone then, but really, let's see what they do with it.

First Person might lend itself to the turn based combat of the originals if you think about it; Basically the game did everything to try and reproduce realistic real time combat. It might be the same, except you can only see through your dudes eyes'.

I'm of two minds on this.
On one hand, the game has a slight chance to be good. IF they do things in a very XCOM way. Ie. keep the macro strategy part of the game, and have the shooting replace the tactics bit. Make the first person shooter bits very tactical (ie, make a squad that takes your orders that you need to use carefully strategically). Randomize the levels like in the original. Keep the destructible environments. Keep permadeath.
On the other hand, this seems like just another part of the industry movement towards one genre (first person/over the shoulder shooters). The western RPG genre has already made this shift with games like Oblivion, Fallout and Mass Effect. Look at the genres that were being made in the 90s, and look at how many of those genres don't really exist anymore in the mainstream industry. In many ways, XCOM represented to me all the things games used to be able to do in the industry, but now can't. It combined real time strategy, simulation and tactical gameplay, and had elements of destructible environments and permadeath. You can tell in playing it that they had an idea of the type of game they wanted to make, then tightly crafted the mechanics around that idea, rather than taking an existing set of mechanics and fitting an idea into them. While the new XCOM could be a GOOD game, it strikes me as the result of lack of creativity. The original game was significantly different from other games in what mechanics it used and how it put them together. Nowadays, I'm worried they'll turn it into another coat of paint to put over Halo.
I don't really have enough faith in the industry to believe that they're not going to turn XCOM into a cover based shooter where, if you wait behind a wall long enough, you magically regain your health, and your squad mates only permanently die in pre-scripted plot points. With games being turned into this homogeneous media, what's next? First Person Shooter Planescape Torment? We already saw it happen to Fallout.

It might be the same, except you can only see through your dudes eyes'. Won't happen though. I'm 90% sure this is gonna be a screwup of Fallout 3-esque proportions, but hell, the kids are gonna love it regardless.
