http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2773617/heads.htmlthis is at 32.2k tris and 2 lights (3 lights made it pretty laggy fairly soon) I got up to 100 models before it started getting noticeably laggy.

played with the program for few minutes and here is the result: I've done that having no experience working in 3D apps, so I consider this program as supereasy to start and thinking about using it for modeling... or at least prototyping models for my games. Many thanks to the author

It's not like you'd use the models created here directly in a game. You would probably have to retopologize using a second software, but sculptris works perfect in that pipeline.

first day, second thing made. this is quite fun, though I can see this being a massive pain for anything with hard edges. probly do that with starter models or something.

Sooo.... I see this has been taken over by Pixologic. Is it going to remain free forever? Can I donwload the latest 1.02 version without risk or should I keep a copy of the last 1.0 indie version , JUST IN CASE ? Is the project dead now?

The 1.02 (the latest version right now?) got renamed Alpha 5 (or something like that) and is free forever. From what I understand it's going to be developed but it's probably gonna go commercial.

I kept the first 1.01 release of sculptris (without the pixologic logo) and 1.02 (alpha 5 with the pixologic logo) freshly downloaded just in case.
The main thing I am wondering is will it be integrated into ZBrush or as a separate program? Could not find the answer on any forum I saw.
I hope they keep it separate, and hopefully make it cheaper. ZBrush is pretty cheap already, but it's still expensive if you are just doing this as a hobby.

I don't see why pixologic would keep it alive, they'll probably devise some sort of licensing "for indies" for zBrush with some strings attached, that's the cynical in me talking.

Pixologic didn't purchase Sculptris, they hired Sculptris' creator. (Dr. Peter) This could very easily mean that they intend to integrate some of Sculptris' features into ZBrush. But its highly unlikely that they will attempt to acquire or further develop Sculptris. Sculptris is not a brand they own, it makes far more sense for them to just tap Dr. Peter for his tech and programming savvy to improve their existing products. This could possibly mean that Sculptris development will fall off and the program will lose support. (the man only has so much time to spend) We'll see how things go.

Now that he's empoyed by them he probably can't legally work on anything on the side. And I don't see why they would continue develloping sculptris instead of promoting maybe simpler versions of their own program (which is superior).

It depends on the specific employee contract. Some companies are real dicks about that. Most companies these days don't lay claim to your personal work, especially if it is unrelated to what your day job is. And its only natural that Pixologic wouldn't continue development of Sculptris, they don't own Sculptris. They didn't buy Dr. Peter's software, they hired the man himself. It's likely that Sculptris development will fall off now, but it won't be because of any decision that Pixologic made. Dr. Peter is probably just going to be really busy with his new job, and won't have as much time to spend developing his side projects. (he is known for a lot of his smaller, but very useful, applications) One of the best features of Sculptris is its dynamic polygon density. I imagine Pixologic hired him because they want to incorporate that feature into Z-Brush.

It does look like they own Sculptris now, based upon this thread on their website:
Yes, that definitely appears to be the case. The bad news is that they now own Sculptris. The good news is that they don't seem to be burying it. (for the time being) The further bad news is that Sculptris will most likely be transitioned into a commercial product in the forseeable future. Of course, that could also be good news for fans of the program, since it would help to insure further development and improvements to the software.

I don't know whether or not it's a good thing... The way I see it, if it goes commercial it'll lose a lot of its current users. Would've been great to see this as a continued product, remaining free, for use as a companion (atleast for my part) to Blender.
