Isn't there an option to "downgrade" the high poly mesh to low poly?

Yeah, and for making the low poly as well. But Blender is very powerful for an open source program (for modelling and animation etc), and they have even improved the tricky UI lately.
Whoah, haven't heard about any UI updates. I'll have to check that out ASAP.

Nice program though I can't get painting work  Huh? Whenever I click painting icon, it doesn't stay "pressed" and there doesn't appear circle marking a brush. Same with some of the other tools. Am I missing something?

There's a reduce quality brush that you can use for part of that, and blender or whatever for the rest.

What's with all the shiny people are applying to their materials?..

I'm really having trouble with it - I keep on running into glitches, and in general have trouble forming the shapes that I want to.  I'll have to give it a couple of more tries I guess : )
