Uru Live.

No battles, just exploring and hardcore puzzles.

I second this.

Is this just Myst with multiplayer? Is this something good to grab a friend and solve the puzzles together (as opposed to one player knowing the solutions already)?

Yeah, Uru is especially fun with friends. It really makes it all a lot more fun. It's also got a really close-knit community who is very welcoming to new members.

You seem to enjoy MMOFPSs. Team Fortress 2 is halfway-through becoming one. Wink
Yeah, especially if the server you're playing on is running hlstatsX, in which case you earn points for kills and stuff.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but about half of these games don't appear to warrant the 'MMO' tag at all. Any game that relies on small instances with little to no overwold in which to interact with say 100+ people doesnt seem to me to fit the definition of massive. Urban dead, runes of magic, and atlantica online seem to fit, but in games like league of legends, most of the gameplay is being shared between a squad of four or so, which is less than massive.

The OP used the game "Battlefield Heroes" as his first example of a game he liked. All of the games suggested are at least as "Massively multiplayer" as that.

I tend to think the MMO tag can be used pretty widely. It's not even about how many people you see at a time, but the fact there's a huge community pool of people you can hang out with and visit. Games like Kingdom of Loathing are totally instanced, but there's no doubt that the whole playerbase influences events even if it's just one player attempting some weird in-game stunt, or a group of players holding an in-game contest. Even games like Team Fortress and League of Legends owe a lot to players to help drive the evolution of the game. Had these been Halo-style console releases the play would be the same, but there would be minimal influence from the players to develop the game.

http://urbandead.com/ were a brilliant zombie apocalypse MMO in the early days. I haven't played it for years so I don't know if it still have the same charm.

But damn, to log in every day to support the barricades of Caiger Mall during the siege was epic. The game is almost a MUD, there is basically no graphics, but the fear is real when you face a horde of zombies.

Wow, this game is fascinating, it is much deeper than I though at first. The atmosphere of the game is nice and it is basically community driven.

I played it today, I didn't really like it, its like warcraft 3, but you only control 1 character like normal rpgs, and you cant build anything, or control your minions, so it takes away all the fun from RTS, and it doesnt have all the fun of normal mmorpgs...

Battle of the Immortals has passed the test for me though, I still play it, and you can buy the same things that can be bought with real money if you work enough. I am still playing AA3 too, but not Battlefield Heroes.

It's based on (and made by some of the guys who made) the crazy popular WarCraft III DoTA map; that's where the resemblance comes from. Don't think of it as a traditional MMORPG, think of it as something like the Unreal Tournament of action RPGs. It gets really intense.

On your suggestion I decided to give it another go, this time I did have fun Smiley.
The game is more like an abreviated version of what a mmorpg is all about, you buy stuff, you gain levels, you explore, you fight monsters, you help your friends, and so on.

Somehow playing it with more people makes it more caotic and fun, good game.

I just tried True combat elite, IMO it is inferior to AA3, it is not bad, but AA3 has even more tactical and team involvement, and it has the advantage of being more known. Also, the ping on it is too high for me due to not having servers that are close to me.

Any other games to share?.

Heroes of Newerth is basically a direct port of DoTA. The patch notes were mirroring the DoTA ones for a while. It's a bit faster, it's more reliant on knowledge of how items work, and the community attached to it tends to be less friendly.

As a novice at these sorts of games, I found League of Legends a better choice. But Heroes of Newerth does have more features dedicated to e-sports, leaderboards, and record keeping. The UI is also a bit more polished. If you're awesome at DoTA, it's probably a better game for you.

League of Legends is amazing. I play it regularly. Leagues (dohoho) better than Heroes of Newerth.

I have been playing Dungeons and Dragons online, it has a very different battle system than the rest, you move more, you can block, and that sounds simple but it makes the difference. The game play is much faster too, specially when you are in a group. Try it.
