Oh look a final boss

The ending is pretty great. If you're uncertain about continuing, I would recommend getting at least to the Path of Scylla (which is at the start of the second path branch). It's the coolest level in the game.

I'm still missing two secrets, though! Grrr!

There are people who are interested in getting into video games, but have the same reaction to, say, Cave Story, or anything beyond Canabalt, that you guys are having to Hydorah. They want to like it but just don't have the right combination of skill and persistence. On the one hand, it makes me sad that so much of the video game community is out of reach of these people. On the other hand, Hydorah is awesome.  Evil

I'm especially digging the Path of the Scylla level on the second fork of the map. EDIT: Jinx!

FINALLY got past that huge level and got more save points.

Also, this game's making me rage so hard it's not funny. The level design is amazing though, and you don't often say that about shmups these days.

I can't even beat the second level, but it's still awesome sauce.

If there are more saves, then maybe in future I'll actually get somewhere.

I can't help but to feel a sort of "uncanny valley" effect while playing this game. If you've played the Gradius series as much as I have, it just feels weird to play a game that sounds, looks and even feels like Gradius yet isn't. Even the font and menu sound effects sound like they came straight from Gradius V (yet are original). They even have the power up system from Salamander in it.

I know it's inspired by those games. But I still wish it had a bit more originality to it. It kinda drives me nuts and makes it hard for me to enjoy the game on its own merits, especially when in the back of my mind I keep comparing it to Gradius.

 Tears of Joy

AMAZING. I LOVE IT. EVERYTHING IS GREAT. ALSO, DIFFICULT, BUT STILL FUN.

Good thing I've never played Gradius huh?

Or maybe a bad thing.

This game is super polished and awesome fun to play! I only stumbled across 8-bit killer after playing Hydorah and that's also really fun too. No music plays in my game though, strangely enough.

For some reason the game will barely play for me.

The first time it worked, but now it staggers like crazy, and when I get into the game it acts as if I'm holding the left and up buttons.

I've tried compatibility modes and running as admin, this is just too weird.  Shrug

I had an issue with constantly moving upwards but it turned out that my gamepad sticks were off center. The readme also says: "Plugging a gamepad on the fly can cause a slow down for a few seconds."

Just finished this.  I'm really impressed with it!  The enemies are original, the weapons are good, nice pixel art, great soundtrack (especially in the final stage).

I don't know whether the ending I got is the "good" one or the "bad" one though, would any of you happen to know the difference?  I'm assuming that it has something to do with the ancient sword you get from using the light in the temple.  I used it on Hydorah twice, but I didn't finish him off with it.

(spoilers)

I beat specifically beat Hydorah using it, and nothing seemed to change. I think it's more linked to getting the secrets. I'm wondering what that map in the room just before the boss means.

I think the ancient sword is just supposed to be a really good power (and it is!)

After playing Galactic Inferno for a few hours now over the last few days, may I win it now? Pretty please? Sad

I've hardly ever played a more frustrating game (level). Especially that level is so easy in theory, but every time I get a damn stupid death somewhere else. And even if I make it to the "final" boss I die once and then it's over, anyway.

I don't think losing powerups upon death is so bad in general, but in boss fights it's really terrible. "Oh, you weren't good enough to beat the boss with full powerups and a shield? Well, maybe you can do better when you're weaker? Let's try it!".

[edit]
And just now I make it, of course. Finally..

Yeah, past a certain point it's basically unplayable if you ever die.

Also, there is something wrong with the hitbox. I keep getting killed by attacks that are visibly not hitting the ship.

Oh, and also: if there are a few different paths you can take in a level (basically high, mid or low) at least one will be so narrow dodging is impossible.
I thought the intent may be to have some reward so I tried to work my way through one path in an early level and there was nothing to be gained besides losing a life.

Yeah, after many attempts, I beat the game with 9/9 extra lives, because it's impractical to die. Tongue
