Yeah, past a certain point it's basically unplayable if you ever die.
Oh. Well so much for me ever getting to beat this game I was enjoying it too, even though I can't pass the 2nd level.

Don't let that stop you from playing it.

At Chevy: JohnNesky is lying! I died several times on the second-to-last and last levels. The hardest points all can be defeated with a completely upgraded ship, or just what you happen to grab at the start of the area. The later areas tend to have a pile of upgrades right at the start for you, in case of death.
Could we try to organize secrets here? I'm kind of ticked by the two I'm missing. (Spoilers ahead)
First secret: Astronaut- at the start of the second level, there's a downed ship with a small man walking around nearby. touch the man with your ship to pick him up and get a secret.
Second secret: Flower- during the inside portion of the Cult of Hydorah level, there is a flower hidden behind an electric shield. Grabbing the flower requires that you have a shield of your own.
Third secret: ??
Fourth secret: Pink elephant- On Untulia (at the start of the second level branch), about halfway through there's an elephant trapped under some ice. Shooting at the ice with your weapons is difficult, but if you use the scord it's easy to grab.
Fifth secret: Treasure- in the Black Gate (the secret path branch at the end), there are many nooks which contain ship power ups. At the end of the level, there is a nook on the right side that has no items visible. The bottom of that nook is a secret passage that you can go through to grab the secret. I got this secret by shooting fully upgraded vulcan at the nook to see where the secret path was.
Sixth secret: ??

Secret: Bring the Light with you to the final level, and the 3 rotating suns will be replaced with a rotating light and a small blue tablet. Pick up the tablet to get the secret.
I'm at the final boss, and all he does is sit there and take damage. Can this guy be killed, or should I give up?

Thanks! He should start by spawning creatures that fly at you, and later does a charge attack. If he's really not doing anything, then I'm not sure

Yeah until you fucking die and lose them. There are some points in this game that are straight up "fuck you." I never felt that way in Gradius or Thunderforce games. Gahd.

Losing your powerups on death really is lame.

The Gradius Effect. Good god, I still can't believe how not fun this level is.

I found it fairly fun, and very rewarding once I beat it.
But hey, if you're not enjoying yourself, no reason to keep suffering.

one thing i learned from this game is just how out of touch gamers today are with real challenge. this game would have been considered fairly normal for a shmup 20-30 years ago. i didn't feel it was particularly challenging myself. not an easy game, but definitely not a hard game. standards change so much.
of course, part of it is familiarity with the genre. i've probably played 200-300 shmups over my liftime, so i find myself easily able to adapt to new ones. but because i've only played about 10 first person shooter games, those are incredibly hard for me. it took me forever to beat half life 2, for instance, and it was full of frustration. but i imagine for people familiar with that genre of games it wasn't that hard.
