Making of Hydorah

It's not very detailed, but it's a nice read Smiley

Makes me love Hydorah even more. I love hearing about the development process - and it's so nicely designed! These guys are serious professionals.

I could imagine this game coming in one of those big old PC Game boxes, jewel case, glossy "making of" booklet, maybe a poster. And of course the game itself - which I intend to beat one day. Brilliant!

ALSO: A home made reproduction Muselaar. No wonder the game sounds so nice.

Hi.  I haven't read this whole thread but wanted to say what a great looking game this is! It's particularily inspiring to me what with my own shmup projects underway, and I guess I can picture the efforts to get this made better than those who haven't embarked on such a project.

If I end up with something half as polished then I've done well.  I also really enjoyed reading the making of pdf that you provided.

Really looking forward to having a play through soon.

Gaaah! I keep trying to play this game but it's so haaarrrrdddd!  Mock Anger

I keep running into walls and stuff! I guess I just suck at shmups or something...

But I'll keep trying. And eventually I'll get past the first level... maybe...

If you're using the keyboard, try a gamepad. I'm usually pretty decent at playing shmups with keyboard controls, but with Hydorah it made a huge difference for whatever reason.

I'll try, thanks. I've never been a big gamepad guy, but I won't turn down a chance to improve my rather useless shmup skills.

I'm having the same problem Nix! Game seems lovely but I'm put off by the difficulty. I wish they would include an easy mode for shmup wimps like myself. May have to get the gamepad out...

I also struggled a lot with the difficulty, but in the end I saw the game partly as an "anger management trainer" Giggle.. and loved it!

Have I said that the way saves are implemented is just about perfect? It dodges both the "too easy" factor of unlimited saves/continues and the frustration of having to beat the same levels over and over and over again. Very well done.

Don't forget your "powers", Turri Wall etc. In the beginning I mostly forgot about using them, but by now I'm finding them more and more useful.
Turri Wall is crucial, not for the damage it does, but because it makes you invincible for a second or two, even against stuff it doesn't destroy. For example, it's great with the Rocks Fall Everybody Dies "boss" in the Dunarys Temple, when you realize that you've trapped yourself in a corner and there's no way you can get out from under the next rock.

Yeah, the invincibility is huge.

Scort is the best secondary item for similar reasons.  The extra firepower is alright, but its ability to absorb shots for you is huge.
