Cool site, I haven't seen it before. I'm not that big on shooters, but Raiden II and Varth looks great. I used to play a lot of Gradius and LifeForce/Salamander cuz I had a NES though. I made (half finished) my own static screen shooter (Demon Attack style) called Xixozoriax a while ago, in Atari 2600 style.

Do I see another Arsecast award coming my way? :D

Yes, this one comes with an actual prize, too. From my actual arse. Wink

Oh, in a couple of years that particular artefact will worth a fortune.  Grin

If you can stand the smell that long... Wink

How do free-roaming shooters like Bangai-O sit with you?

Have you finally got around to playing that now, Anthony?

Is it not the sexxorz? Smiley

I like speed; I like to dodge bullets; I like it when you enter in this zen-like state of mind where you are just staring at your screen, not thinking, nor blinking, just moving at light speed and performing perfectly, and when you are out of it you just wonder how in the hell you did that.

I don't consider it a good shooter if I can't meditate while playing it.

Any Fuzetsu fans out there?

Yup, it's been part of my collection for a while now. Don't have the N64 version yet though. It is indeed the sexxorz. At first it didn't seem to really make sense (is this what I'm supposed to do? Is this right? Is this the gameplay? Hey, I scored negative points!) And then it really, really started to make sense. A very strange and unique sort of sense.

I'd have no problem saying that to Gradius V. There's no amount of polish nor superb gameplay that could win me over. I just don't feel comfortable in horizontal scrolling environment. Like holding a spoon in the wrong hand.
GradiusV has bits that go up and down as well as horizontal. Obviously that would be unsatisfactory if you're a horiz-hater but how would you feel about a vertical game that had horiz forced sections?  I'm doing a vertical game at the mo and thinking of including such ideas.

Seeing as this is my first post, and it's a shmup thread, I'll pimp my shmups:
'troid and fren-ze

Now it's out of the way, I wont be tempted again.

Mmf, you can't pimp Fren-Ze enough as far as I'm concerned.

I still haven't mastered the bastard and I think I must have bought it within about 10 minutes of you posting the link on YakYak! Lovely, lovely but oh so brutal game.

Fren-ze is fucking amazing - do not be ashamed to pimp that.

At the same time, something has my blood boiling (which is saying something since I'm anemic and their ain't much to boil...)

On 'Shoot the Core' 'Clean Asia' is not listed as a must have. Why is this? Honestly, I'm just wondering why it wouldn't be from a critic/reviewer stand point...

Thanks for the fren-ze love chaps!

I havn't managed to get into Clean Asia yet, I found the mechanic really tricky. I was trying the first ship type which is more difficult isn't it?

Perhaps you could wire up a controller with the sticks rotated around 90 degrees and play it on an upended TV.

How do free-roaming shooters like Bangai-O sit with you?

Rotating sticks and screens could maybe work but most of the hshmups are showing my ship from the side view. I particulary dislike that. Vertical scrolling - top view. Fanatic I am! Shocked

Didn't play Bangai-O but I suspect I'd constantly avoid going left/right Smiley

Why polluting a perfectly neat vertical shooter with disgraceful ho.rizontal sections? Unless of course it would add an interesting enough twist to the gameplay of which I'm not too certain. But then again, maybe it's indeed just my horizontal-hatred speaking Tongue

Fren-Ze was really nice, if a tad too bullethellish for my taste. Grin

Yea, the first one is really freaking hard. In my opinion anyways...

I really enjoyed Clean Asia for some reason (probably because it's awesome).

BTW, here are my Thailand finish times.

Beat that!

Three things that are good about horizontal shooters:

1) you can do lots of cool parallax and create a really nice view all the way to the horison.
2) it fits better on standard monitors; this is even more true now that things are going widescreen
3) you get to play with bouncy/gravity-type mechanics.
