So YouTube is getting increasingly painful to use. Where I previously could live stream HD casts in both 720 and 1080p, now I have to pre-load 480p movies and am lucky if I once in a while can view 360p clips without hiccups.
Today it took almost 20 minutes to pre-cache a 1:38 long newscast in 480p, and this was during off-peak time when Americans are asleep. HD movies can't even be fetched, they result in "an error has occurred", which I take is rightspeak for throttling.
As usual there are the wingnut conspiracy theories, f.i. that Islamist governments have messed with YouTube routings and whatnot, but might it be that YouTube has simply grown to the extent that it can't support its own load and we're seeing its first death throes?

I've noticed at the beggining of this year that yuotube can hardly keep the video cached anymore. If you want to use the slider to move the video within the section that is already loaded, it will start reloading the whole stuff again, this is annoying.

Yeah, I've noticed slowdowns as well. It may be unconnected, but also when I try to stream youtube videos (this ONLY happens with youtube) whilst having more than about 3 tabs open in chrome, or loading a page from wired (or other high bandwidth site) then youtube begins to stutter horribly.
and its always been slow on my ipod.

I always thought it was my connection, but it's blazing fast for other stuff so maybe it is the site.
I say they start enforcing quality control.

And who decides what's "quality" and what isn't? Besides, even if there was a way to objectively judge to it, I'm not sure if the additional workload and costs are even worth it.

Yeah, other streaming sites are all but instant for me too, but youtube is increasingly sluggish. Actually, I almost wish it was sluggish: a better work atm could be "sessile". And looking around there are huge amounts of reports on this. I guess that Google might invest a few millions into more servers, but I have a nagging feeling that we've seen the golden days of youtube.

I haven't noticed this and usually Vimeo or other such players tend to load slower, or at least get started. Might be because I watch rather seldom any videos in Youtube and while I do, they are usually rather short (0:30-12:00 minutes). I have to say I'm little interested in what's the problem though and is it or is it wanted to be fixed by Google. What I mean is is this the begin of the end of YT or is it just something which can simply be fixed with few more servers.

i don't know what you guys are talking about, the site loads fine for me and videos load very quickly, even 1080p videos load faster than i can watch them (i don't have to wait for them to cache). maybe it really is your connections?

I was joking, although I think they could clear up a lot of space by just cracking down on the copyright infringement (not that I particularly want them to, as it's nice to be able to listen to bands you haven't heard somewhere).

The only reason Youtube should be a walking dead is for their geoblocking methods.

I liked Youtube back when you had the option to hide user comments.
