We don't need more women in indie games. There's plenty of attractive characters like that in them. What we need is more indie games in our women.

So... why don't we make a classy lady emoticon as a female counterpart to the gentleman and call it a day. Ultimately, it doesn't matter whether it is just a societal characteristic or there is a biologic influence as well, people make their choices. I wouldn't call it a problem, because I can't see why there is a problem when people are (not) doing something of their own accord. In the particular case of indie game development there is no barrier of entrance other than having a computer and (maybe) internet connection. I don't see anybody keeping women out of the scene. Personally, I don't even see software development in general as a typically masculine task and my acquaintances don't seem to do it either. It isn't physical work. Most people I talk with seem to want more developer women, even if only because of second intentions, and I don't see developer women being looked down upon. If there is a problem, it seems to be more of a circular logic thing. Maybe not even that, maybe most women just choose to do something else or don't even think about it. Anyway, game development is something I would incentive anyone to do. The more varied game developers are, the more unique their games will likely be. I have been teaching pseudocode to my little sister. I want to introduce her to game development and she seems to be interested in it.

Huh, I read the blog article.
The more developers the better for peoples' enjoyment, imo. Most of the indie game developers I know were either self taught or took some programming classes (or both). I have observed that there are not as many women studying Computer Science as there are men (or studying Physics).
There is little doubt that there are some cultural and social expectations that discourage women (and men) from entering into indie game development. Social and cultural expectations may (I am not citing any sources right now) be effective for encouraging and discouraging behavior of certain peoples. Part of it is quite psychological. People have 'prototypes', at least from what I can recall from Prototype theory, and/or concepts of how they conceptualize things/persons (categorize thoughts). Some more common prototypes may be a prototypical well groomed male for president (usually not exceptionally short and overweight with long hair), wiz kid game developer (as opposed to the elderly), overweight male football fan, overweight male video game player (or little boy), female slim ballet dancer (as opposed to an overweight male), young slim female cheer leader, older female knitter, slim swimmer, female (or gay male) hair stylist and Nintendo as the video game console (as opposed to the Sega Dreamcast). These prototypes may not be the most accurate, or actually exist in reality. I don't think prototypes are consciously formed, though I think some people attempt to manipulate another persons prototypes (possibly through advertisement).
If something challenges someone's prototype a person may handle such a challenge in a number of different ways. If someone or something does not fit the way one understands the world, challenging one's prototypes, perhaps they will attempt to alleviate such a challenge. Perhaps they will attempt to mold the world to their prototypes (ie encourage men to play football, discourage women; encourage women to do ballet, discourage men), change there prototype to include such an exception (though one's prototype of something, say a chair, cannot be all inclusive, otherwise it fails to properly categorize and organize thoughts in regards to a chair); perhaps a separate category will be formed, such as a fragmenting of concepts, requiring sub-categorizing, rather than just having indie game developer prototype being a male wiz kid, perhaps that category would have a sub-category female indie game developer with a female wiz kid prototype.
Also if something doesn't fit a persons prototype they may find such an exception attention grabbing. Which may cause a female indie game developer; male ballet dancer or a female foot ball player developer extra attention which may be good, bad, mixed and/or unwanted.
Anyways, psychology, philosophy and all can be interesting.
In this case when one states 'We need more women in Indie Games'. I would like to know: Who is this 'we'? (The world? gamers? women? men?) Need for what purpose/motivation/goal? How does having more women in Indie games relate to this need?
I don't think I know the sex of most of the independent game developers. Indie game developers can renain quite mysterious if they so wish. I know there are a few women (at least one who I can recall, but can't name right now) in indie game development.
Things will change, there may be more women in indie game development in the future. There is almost always room for improvement. (I was going to say always, but there are counter examples I could think of...)

Indie games in general needs more people to make games, and realise that making games is not an impossible goal, and that there are unique qualities to games which more people could be taking advantage of to create interesting works. More people = more opportunities for socialising! (Which is super important for creative types.) I mean, it's awesome that we have weekly indie meets in Cambridge. Really awesome! (Even though I have to go after work and therefore can't get much game making done, it's still very useful) More people = less stereotypes, hopefully!

i thought a lot about this today. i started thinking about women gamers and what it means to the industry. i think a woman's perspective is needed to counter our own rational views. right now the industry is unbalanced, there's not enough of a mother's love going into our games. if we had more girl gamers we'd get more games that are about things boys don't think about making games of like cooking and cleaning and buying things, giving APPLES out, etc. less games about dragons. girls don't like dragons but they do like ponies. maybe this My Little Pony show can be used to land us some gamer gals. i recommend we all make MLP games as soon as possible and show them to mom. based on this test case we can then hand out pink jump drives with more mlp games and from there it is hook line and sinker. maybe we can incorporate some pick up artist techniques or some magic tricks to dazzle the easily impressed chicks ftw.
i'll have more later, thanks for reading.

You forgot all brown shooters, which should take instead pink color scheme. I guess Gimmy Tilbert would be happy then too.
