Can't the power companies just turn off the grids during the worst of it?
Sorry, that's not really how induction works. Induction is caused by a change in magenetic field in a wire. Imagine it like rubbing a magnet on a wire, the magnetic field would cause a current. It's basically the same as an electric motor, but in reverse. In a motor the current in the wire causes a magnetic field, which interacts with the magnets and causes movement.

[edit]
I agree with mipe, there shouldn't be too much of a problem with personal computers but the major problem will be with the power lines and their length

Oh shit, it's been only ten years since the great compu-catastrophe of Y2k. Mankind is still too fragile, we won't survive it. Not even the giant owl-cats will help us this time.

i asked my physics/science advisor for my games about this, and he said

"this doesn't sound too bad; they do say it's possible for this cycle to cause up to that much damage, but we don't have enough data to say that that's even a likely scenario, and in any event we've seen more energetic periods in the last several decades which didn't do anything like that, so there easily may have been other factors contributing then which we have no clue about"

"as I recall, sunspot activity goes in 11 year cycles, so we've seen a dozen of these since the last really bad event"

Until they build science bases on the moon and we're living up there NASA and their predictions can go suck my fucking balls.

I can imagine Paul's advisor lives in a video box that pops up beside his head whenever he has a physics/science question for him.

I LOLd.  Cheesy

And as far as the prediction goes, unless im reading the charts wrong the solar maximum of the cycle in 2013 will be milder than the one in 2001.
