I would say that the community here is small enough for people to be able recognise someone's username rather than just their avatar.

Yep, I recognize most of the active users by name but usually identify poster first by their avatar. Might change my avatar soon, though I like my current one cool enough that maybe not.

Avatars tend to stand out more because they're, well, pictures, as opposed to text. That said, I would still recognize most active users by name if they did change their avatar. I myself change my avatar whenever I find one that I like more than my current avatar. I don't think I could ever change my avatar, now.
