Okay so if you like pixel art metroidvanias-- and OBVIOUSLY you like pixel art metroidvanias because WHY ELSE WOULD YOU BE ON THIS FORUM, then I have for you the most important news possibly of your entire life: Ufouria, the long-lost NES platformer, has just been released for Wii Virtual Console. Ufouria is basically the horribly deformed child of Metroid and Hello Kitty, and is one of the finest platformers ever created for the NES-- if you ask me the best one released without "Mario" in the name. It was originally released under the name "Hebereke" in Japan with slightly different character designs at the end of the NES lifespan, then was localized and released in Europe, but has never been released for sale in America until today. The version now on U.S. virtual console is the PAL version unchanged, with unbelievably loopy translation fully intact. Non-obvious advice: Hold down to stomp, hit "select" for character select.

This really needs to be a general Sunsoft thread.

I'm OK with this! Sunsoft's 8 bit stuff gets a lot of love but they had some amazing output for the Super Nintendo as well. Road Runner: Death Valley Rally and Taz-Mania for the SNES are as good as licensed video games get. One of the better uses ever of mode 7 to attempt an actual gameplay mechanic This game ended every single level with a totally viable Wile E. Coyote gag, and the platforming is legitimately deep and challenging, AND there is a "meep meep" button! Why doesn't every game have a "meep meep" buttonI stole the top two images here from consoleclassix.com

Obscure Sunsoft game avatar fight! Are you asking for a challeeeeeeeenge?! It's aawwwwwn. Uh, how do we go about this? At any rate, Sunsoft made some cool games. Trip World was suggested to me by Dess and I love it. It's a sorta-sequel to Gimmick and a sorta-prequel to the Seiklus/Knytt exploration sub-genre. The enemy AI and interactions therein are amazing. Sunman
is an unreleased NES game that is pretty interesting. Check out the link for more info.

Batman on the Megadrive has one of the best 8-bit soundtracks ever. I'm a bit sweet on Batman as I spent a few nights alone with it back in the day. It may look stiff and it may have two shoot-em-up stages in a row (which sounds like torture) but it plays really well and sounds fantastic.

Ufouria is great. I managed to get the NES PAL cartridge a while ago for 8 euros I should probably get some other Sunsoft games. Trip World looks really cool.

Atlantis No Nazo is one of the stranger NES (Famicom/whatever) games I know. Imagine Adventure Island on acid and you're about halfway there.

Ufouria was a great game, surprised it made it on Virtual Console since it wasn't very popular. Not sure about that list though, I played all of those... they were all pretty well covered in Nintendo Power and a lot of them were cover features. I guess if exposure to NES games is limited to emulators then yea people would miss those.

Atlantis No Nazo is one of the stranger NES (Famicom/whatever) games I know. Imagine Adventure Island on acid and you're about halfway there. For the other half, imagine that it's that one creepiest kid in school, the guy who tries to make chemical bombs that never work and tortures snails. Edit: Ufouria is the bomb. When I was little, my NES didn't work, so I used emulators. Eventually I found this one. It was an embarrassingly long time before I figured out how to stomp.

It was an embarrassingly long time before I figured out how to stomp. Hahaha, me too. But, it's a testament to how cool the game is that you can get really far without attacking enemies...

The unintuitive stomping got me as well! What's worse is when you accidentally stomp a foe, realize it can be done, and then take a few hits before you realize what you are doing wrong.
The only negative to Ufouria is that it is very short. Most of the time you spend playing will be spent on trying to figure out where to go next, or how to solve a couple of the puzzles. Ultimately, it feels like the replay value is very low. However, that first playthrough is very enjoyable!

I'm really happy that they put The Guardian Legend at #1 on that list... Rightfully so. But I can't believe they didn't include Crystalis. That game is just as unknown and perhaps even better than TGL. I dunno which one is my #1, but both of those games are my favorite NES games of all time.

i think crystalis was slightly more popular than guardian legend -- not sure though. it was games people haven't played, and i think more people have played crystalis than guardian legend (especially due to that awful ds (or gba?) remake of crystalis)
i am happy they mentioned princess tomato in the salad kingdom though, that's one of the best nes games
but at the same time, it's weird to call *any* of those nes game 'unknown' because i'd say that most gamers who are fans of the nes are familiar with all the games mentioned on that list. i at least had heard of all of them, and had played most of them, and i imagine the same is true for other fans of the nes.
