I think the real name issue mostly stems from caution for younger children to not give out personal details. You teach them early on to keep that information private because it is too easy to piece together personal details from across the internet and pin somebody down. Perhaps some people take that caution into adulthood, albeit needlessly.

I tend to not use my real name in public fora because I like to control what information people can access about me. Keeping it out of a general google search, at least, introduces enough confusion to keep all but the most determined seekers out. I will use it on a facebook page, but then I am extremely cautious about what I put there because that stuff is used in background checks which are a big deal if you're involved in secure stuff. So no, I don't intend to ever put my name on the TIG forums where anyone could see it.

I don't have a problem with sharing my name via private communications, however. I use my real name on my e-mail, and certainly I'd share it with any folks I meet at a live TIG event.

I only post under kavs because it's easier to remember than my actual name. I link to my real portfolio with my resume and everything so I'm not trying to hide.

My real name is Brad Kavanagh, and up until a few years ago I was the #1 result when searching for that on Google. Then I was replaced by a Disney teenage singer. Now I'm #2.

My first tag was 'Koro64' (1 internet point to whoever knows the name reference).
My second was 'oktobeme', which at grade7 I realized was lame.
My third was 'Kibble', which I used for a long long time. It's memorable and works well for shooters.

I have since moved on to 'kavs', which is a shortened form of my last name and is what the guys at work call me. It's easy enough to remember and it's what I'm trying to brand myself as going forward.

More people know me by my nick or call me by that name, so I use it much more often than my real name. I think I've had it 14 years and running now. :D

I have been wondering about it for a while. The only reason I keep using Atnas is because I've been using it since I started using the internet. Getting rid of it feels just a bit like getting rid of a third of my life.

I like my internet name. It's simple, memorable, and symbolic.

If someone wanted to find my real name it would be very easy. But pseudonyms save time and allow us to easily get a hold of who is who.

Also, I never had a nickname ever.

I use nickname since I don't want my realname be spread everywhere. I'm not that paranoid about that as before so I use often my full name in private discussions. Also I think that my real name could be a bit boring and perhaps little foreign for non-finnish though it's rather simple. I'll also add my full name in my game's credits

However, I have though about my current nickname and if it's hard to remember or pronounce for people? It's one of my irl nickname so it isn't optimized for internet usage
