Good thing that's not how indie developers operate.

Yes. Indies are a much more likeable bunch. OR ARE THEY?

I think there's a lot to gain besides money or recognition. You get to go to GDC as a nominee and hang out with other indies, you get to show off your game to other developers and talk to them at the IGF Pavilion, you get a front row seat at the award show next to people like Miyamoto and Carmack... and if you win you get a chance to thank everyone who's helped you get there in front of a crowd of your peers and heroes.

If they just mailed you an award and a check, I doubt C418/Notch would have entered. I could be wrong, but that's my impression.

That's kind of my point, he could easily do that on his own. He doesn't need the ticket or whatever, and if he does get the ticket it means someone else doesn't. I don't know, whatever.

Note to self: if I ever become successful, I better keep it to myself.

true, but considering how big the minecraft phenomenon is, i think it definitely has a shot at the main gdc (game developer's choice) awards, competing with AAA games. why settle for beating cactus and rohrer when you can beat miyamoto and romero?

e.g. the issue isn't whether it's wrong for minecraft to enter, since clearly it's not; they've the right to enter. the issue is more: what does minecraft have to gain from entering? i don't really know the answer to that.
Being chosen by a panel of experts to be awarded a prize for the finest work among his peers?
It's a different kind of recognition from the accolade of the masses.
And I'm not intimidated by the competition.

I dunno, I would prefer to be in the same league as cactus rather than Romero.

Also, I don't think he will get the main prize because winning is not a function of game's popularity. Games are judged by humans who take stuff like who needs money more into account. Don't deny the guy his right to participate in a cool event.

This is stupid. Why Notch? Because he was open about how much he has made? I'm guessing many of the more successful indies entering their games are pretty well off and don't need money that much. If we're to judge the game by needs of their developers, I think americans shouldn't be allowed to enter, because $20k doesn't mean that much to them while for me here in Poland it's equal to 2 years salary.

I love how you guys say what Notch should do in this and other threads. He should promote indie other games, he should link to this community, he should use the money he has for the good of indie games, blah blah.
You behave like he owes a great deal to you and this community, like it wasn't his own hard work that made him successful. No guys. He can do whatever he wants and he owes you fuck all. If he decides to spend his money on building a giant golden penis to remind him of how awesome he is, it's his right to do so.

I don't think Notch is a bad person or that Minecraft is a bad game or anything but I think entering Minecraft into the IGF is a douchey thing to do. Any resulting publicity would only be publicity for the IGF instead of for Minecraft, and the prize money for all the prizes put together would be a drop in the bucket for Notch.

@teegee

i don't think anybody is disputing his rights. but i do think that you should be able to say e.g. that warren buffett uses his fortune better than paris hilton uses hers. people use 'should' all the time about things they can't control. like players of games often say 'your game should have this' or 'your game should do this', even though the developer has the right to make the game however they want.

but i agree that the minecraft discussion is diverting the main topic, even if it's not completely off topic. in the end it's not that important, it's just one year and one game, and years and games pass by quickly.

i do agree though that it's conceivable it may enter and lose anyway, because popular opinion and critical opinion often differ. but it'd still surprise me if it weren't at least a finalist.

My crystal ball says it will be in the finals, but the main prize will go to something that needs money and recognition more. Wizard

I'm entering Scoregasm this year. I wasn't going to, but people seemed to really like it at eurogamer the other weekend and i understand the judging process has changed a little this year.

Cheers
