I don't need the $20000 either, so I won't enter my game 'Extreme Homeopath' for the Invisible Typewriter.

e.g. the issue isn't whether it's wrong for minecraft to enter, since clearly it's not; they've the right to enter. the issue is more: what does minecraft have to gain from entering? i don't really know the answer to that.
Being chosen by a panel of experts to be awarded a prize for the finest work among his peers?
It's a different kind of recognition from the accolade of the masses.
And I'm not intimidated by the competition.
I like this post very well.

I'm entering Scoregasm this year. I wasn't going to, but people seemed to really like it at eurogamer the other weekend and i understand the judging process has changed a little this year.

My crystal ball says it will be in the finals, but the main prize will go to something that needs money and recognition more. Wizard

This is quite possible.  Happened with Monaco.  Another thing to be noted, without stating any of my own judgements regarding Minecraft, is that quality and notoriety/success are independent metrics.  The Game Developers' Choice awards don't seem to respect this, but the IGF does.  Again, Monaco, which beat a much more commercially promising, well-known game to everyone's surprise.

I was reading the old IGF thread (the one with the PixelJunk discussion) and came across this great post by Tommunism (Tommy Refenes). This nearly perfectly describes how I feel about Minecraft and the IGF, but told in a ten times better way than what most of us have been trying to say.

To me...the spirit IGF has always been a way to showcase, innovative, well made, awesome, UNKNOWN games to people who would otherwise never see them or know about them. My perception may be different from another persons, but I really hope I'm on the right track, though with the addition of PixelJunk obviously there's a hole in my understanding of the IGF (on a small scale...seeing that all of the other finalists agree with for the most part). Showcasing the unknown and awesome...that's what I thought it was..and it's probably what it should be. Look at World of Goo. Amazing game, but who knew about it before IGF? I'm not talking about the people on these forums or those that follow Experimental Gameplay Project...I'm talking about the majority of people that purchased the game. They gained exposure from the IGF which ultimately helped them get to their well deserved position today. Granted, it was by no means what made them or their game what they are today, but it did help them and if anything it got the ball rolling by exposing their game to a mass audience. Look at Gish...Gish was unknown before IGF...and IGF put it in front of thousands and thousands of people. Look at Everyday Shooter, it was because it was on display at the IGF that it is on PSN and has done so well. Look at AudioSurf, look at Darwinia, look at Aquaria, the list goes on and on. This is what (at least I think) the IGF is about and this is why, I feel, that their 3 slots in the IGF Finals this year would be better used to propel another unknown developer into the spotlight. I feel that Q-Games entering their game in the IGF was not in the best taste. Independently funded yes...but again...so is Bethesda. Anyone wanna go up against Fallout 3 next year? How about Gears of War 3? How about a first party Capcom title? If the money is spent internally...then they are independent but you won't see those guys entering titles into the IGF.

I want a trophy for my efforts as much as the next guy, but if I'm successful (like Q-Games obviously is)...I think it would be time to squelch my superficial desires and step aside for someone else to take the spotlight. Not sure what Q-Games motivation was behind entering the IGF and I don't claim to know, but they seem very out of place in the IGF.

replace PixelJunk with Minecraft and Q-Games with Notch and pretend I am saying it, and this is what I was trying to get across. The last paragraph is essentially what I've been trying to argue this whole time (aside from being out of place, ignore that last sentence).

yeah, i'm in accord with that quote too. if you click on the quote link there's a part allen didn't quote which goes into why whether it's "indie" or not is besides the point and not at issue

and as bobo said, some of the same people who are arguing in favor of minecraft now were arguing against pixeljunk then!

e.g. haowan / alex may (who i love, so no offense) wrote this:

"Yes, I quite agree - the issue should be one of self-restraint. They don't ultimately need the further exposure or the further recognition."

I suppose I'm with allen, but a bit more blunt. (bad grammar)

I don't have any issue with notch entering minecraft, and he should definitely be able to and should if he wants to. The person that should have an issue should be Notch.

It was my understanding that the issue with the pixeljunk stuff was that q-junk were a large organisation that already had a strong business relationship with sony and were basically dependent on that relationship to keep developing the games/existing.

Regardless of the validity of that argument, it's completely different with Minecraft, which is the work of two guys. If it is not an independent game than the term has no meaning.

Besides the IGF is a contest of merit, not a sales-figure contest. If Minecraft is not better than these allegedly superior games that aren't getting adequate attention, then it will not win anything.

The only people with anything to fear are makers of shit games or those with warped ideas of what makes a good game.

Christ, no one is making that argument at all. Notch and Q-Games are both indie in my book, them being indie or not isn't the issue at all, and we've repeated that a million times.

The q-games clusterfuck was all about them being horrific corporatist drone and the minecraft 'issue' is being compared to the pixeljunk 'issue'...

Though I suppose the whole "When I was saying these two events are similar, I really meant they are completely different." logic is largely consistent with that used to justify anti-minecraft rhetoric.
