Just reading the last couple of posts, why are we (as game designers?) dictating how people should play and enjoy the games we create? I mean, in MineCraft because it's flexible enough to do what you want it does allow you to extract a certain level of fun with it.

Want to make an animal launcher so you can send your pig/cow/sheep into the stars and beyond? MineCraft let's you do that.

Want to make a bacon factory? MineCraft let's you do that.

Want to create phallus shaped objects all over the world? MineCraft let's you do that.

Besides, not all of us like having end goals that are set by the game designer.

A lot of people find enjoyment when they play a game that isn't intended in a certain way. Some people liked self chain sawing themselves in Gears of War, some people like barrier leaping in Gears of War. Those are bugs, yes, but even a game like that people are able to extract fun and enjoyment that is inherently programmed into the game.

On the note of The Sims, I spent most of my time trying to kill my Sims in the weirdest, funniest way possible. I think the best one I remember, was when my Sim got into a fight with the ultra sad clown.

This is why I've been enjoying a lot of board games in the last few months, especially those with very relaxed rules and conditions to win. Settlers of Catan is one such one. While it does have an end goal, how you do it is ultimately up to you.

Because we, as game designers, study the way humans play games and learn from that to better create our games. We as game designers learn why people quit playing and don't pick it back up, and we learn the psychology behind addictive games and enjoyment. We learn about those that want to freely create and we learn about those that want structured rails. And we take what we learn and apply it to our games to make them better.

I don't say its intrinsically a good thing or a bad thing. Its not my opinion, its just how it works. If you create an open sandbox and don't give any structure to it, it will dissuade people from playing with it and lessen its appeal as a 'game'. Games just don't operate like that.

Try this by example.

Whats one of the most open ended sandbox 'games', if minecraft is a 'game' as a sandbox? I'll tell you- a pad of paper and a pencil. Because given those 2 items, a 'player' can create whatever he wants. He can use his animation to bring it to life, and draw a doodle of anything he damn well pleases. It is the ultimate open end. A programmer might reflect on it by writing down pseudocode. An artist might draw a picture, a shopper might write a grocery list. Just out of 'play'? In a 'game'? It becomes not a game, it becomes a tool. An environment, a raw clay that you could build a game out of. Because for a human to play a 'game', it needs to provide the player with meaningful choice. It (generally is agreed that) it needs to have a definable goal. You could take that pad of paper and a pencil and see if you or your friend could throw it closer to the waste basket, and keep score on near misses. Thats a game. Your goal is to get the paper into the basket, your choice is in your physical capabilities.

Minecrafts a sweet bit of coding and malleable, and it has some game elements. But its more just the raw clay, the engine from which the game is built. And thats why it will be so great to see what can be made out of it.

Are you playing the Alpha version of the game that you have to pay for or just the Freebuild mode?

I was just minding my own business, exploring the depths of minecraft, putting down torches to keep the monsters away while I explored a deep mine when suddenly, I realized...

I think as Alpha gets further and further along, Classic is starting to do more harm than good in its current state, because it gives people a completely false impression of what Minecraft is about.

Until a couple months ago, I was one of those people who don't get the "hype" precisely because I had only played Classic and some very early builds from mid-'09. It took watching a few gameplay videos on Youtube and reading a couple pages of the feedback thread here on TIGF to get me interested in the game.

There is a goal: SURVIVE
Therefore it's a game.

Of course you have to pay for the goal

EDIT:
Actually you can code in C (or Lisp) in minecraft ... after you finish building the microprocessor and build all interface and compiler in the WORLD inside the game
