How do some topics get so many replies so quickly? Does it depend on how many people the topic is applicable to? Or how interesting it is? Or both?

I remember posting a topic on GMClans, which was never that active, about what resolution everyone's monitor was, and it instantly got a bunch of replies.

So yeah. Discuss.

Threads that only require a simple response tend to get lots of replies. For example, the 'what are you listening to' thread, and to a lesser extent, the 'things that rock/suck' thread. They only require a sentence or two, and not too much thought needs to be put into them.

Generally topics with an opinion base on it have lots of replies (ex: Things That Rock), if the subject itself is interesting. Topics that are used to showcase stuff (ex: Art thread) can also have lots of replies, again if it's interesting.
It doesn't need to have a big audience, but helps.

Everyone's made good points.

I'd say the clarity of the subject and the intro-post has a lot to do with it as well; if the title isn't clear, or if the original post is too long, people are more likely to just give it a pass. Also, the longer the discussion in each individual post is, the less likely I think it is that more people enter. You may get lots of replies, but the amount of people replying would be smaller, because a lot of people (sometimes including me) just can't be bothered to read through a large discussion.

I don't think the number of replies are as important as the quality of the threads content

but ya, post stuff that requires little to no thought and you're replies will stack like no other

Sometimes I wonder if I posted ten paragraphs of Lorem ipsum in such a trending thread, would anyone notice at all? Would YOU subconsciously attribute the post to Paul Eres and skip-scroll down?

I find that walls of text often cause threads to grind to a halt, which is why I prefer to keep my posts short.
