I think it's more a matter of which finger it belongs to. For instance, I like "jump" to be under my middle or ring finger, which is on the right in a WASD setup (K, for me) and on the left in zxc setup, but never under my index.
also consider that with a controller you're using your thumbs for most buttons but the shoulders, whereas on a keyboard you have more fingers to deal with, each of which acts at differing speeds (at least for me, my index finger is way way faster than my little finger) and might want to consider allocating the keys to each finger depending on which task is most frequently used or in need of rapid pressing, shit like that.

Z jump X attack seems completely backwards to me, probably because in the NES era the A button (rightmost) was generally jump.
Yeah, I was thinking this the other day. But really, on the NES pad the 'arrow keys' were on the left. So the layout is flipped anyway.

But on the NES, the A and B buttons were on the right, if yoou'r using a keyboard, then Z and X are on the left, and therefor, because your using the same fingers, just opposit hands, it should have the same feel. Does for me, anyway. Inside button to shoot, outside to jump.

Well, WASD is even more broken than ZXC. Don't ever EVER use WASD. Almost noone uses this anymore anyway.
Citation required. It is my impression that WASD is the most widely used control cluster in PC gaming. You didn't really give any reason as to why you think it's broken.

Yeah, arrow keys have kind of been more and more marginalized. For indie games, it's a bit more common, but in commercial use WASD is basically the cock of the walk. Does for me, anyway. Inside button to shoot, outside to jump.
I am on board with this. X to jump, C to shoot, Z to extra is my configuration of choice. The reason why I prefer this is that many international keyboards have a key between Z and shift. Shift can still be accessed though, so it's usually used for a 'hold down to run' key or etc.

Commercial games use WASD so that players can use the mouse with their right hands.

It depends on who you ask.
WASD is the choice for mouse use.

I'm a fan of WASD, on the basis that (On my keyboard at least) the WASD cluster is a lot closer to other keys that can be useful, such as Q and E, therefor allowing for more input commands in a quick response time.

even if you're not to fly with gm coding, I think you should still be able to bind y to z at the start of the game with a single line of code so that the foreign keyboards thing is minimized as a problem. Something like
keyboard_set_map(ord('Y'),ord('Z'))
I think it would be? Just once when the game starts up.
wait what GM can do that? I had no idea.
