The Goblin and the Butterfly is a free 2D MMORPG in Beta stage.

The game server is up and running, the client is available for Windows and Linux from the website http://the-green-leaf.de/tgatb.html
For other OS you can try to compile the client from the source code.

The game is written in C using SDL libraries.

There are skills to level, like attack, defense, alchemy, magic, you can compete with other players on the highscore list.

NPC's and creatures populate the world, quests are available.

The game has an in game chat feature, local chat, channel chat and personal messages and a mail function to communicate with players who aren't online right now.

What, would you say, makes this game stand out from other MMORPGs?

Tried this today! I think it's quite nice, though I didn't dig very deeply (yet)! I'm glad to have a game with a native linux version =)

The most distracting thing was that when I wanted to walk in a cardinal direction (NESW) it seemed to take two diagonal steps. This was really distracting for me, I feel like either the arrows should map to diagonals or it should be possible to take steps in the cardinal directions immediately.

The user interface is basic but I kind of like it that way, since it seems that it might have a lot of room to 'grow' without constantly worrying to make everything user friendly. That said it means it will take some commitment to get into it!

Looks cool =)

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, any comment is welcome Smiley

Use the map walker (press TAB key, then click on the map to walk), that makes walking much easier, even when the distance is limited and you can't cross big maps with a single mouse click.

Yep, the user interface right now is mostly text commands + point and click, but i hope to change that during the next weeks and add more windows, like trade window and an interface for storages and shops. As you said, there is a lot of room to grow :D

@Marc Truant
TGatB is not a clone of other games, but has its very own unique world, skills, events and features (thats at least the plan).
For programmers, the client is open source, the artwork is public domain, so you can even use it for your own games.

The game grows constantly, new maps, new features, since it is still in Beta stage (and might be forever, i guess it will never be "finished"). So any comments, ideas and suggestions are welcome.

TGatB was now released with version 1.0.0.19.

This includes the GUI update part 1 & 2, which adds an inventory window, a storage interface, a trade window and packets for stuff on the ground to the game.

The inventory window shows the stuff in your inventory and the stuff you are wearing, wear and unwear stuff with drag&drop.

The storage window shows obviously the stuff in your storage and allows you to deposit and withdraw items with drag&drop.

The trade window allows you to trade with other players by dragging and dropping stuff from your inventory window into the trade window.

Stuff on the ground is now stored in packages, which opens a window, when you click on them. So no more littering on the maps with the remains of killed monsters and the need to walk and pick up every single bone one by one.

Some new NPC's with some new quests were added, some more scripted stories, where evil stuff attacks the peaceful world, and some more secret places.

The website of the game is still here:

TGatB has now finally released version 1.0.0.21.

New features are:

A "Make" window to make stuff by dragging and dropping ingredients instead of typing a text command.

Quests you can do once a day to get a reward plus the needed NPC's to host those quests.

Some new monsters are in game.

The client window can be now configured in different sizes in the config file.

A summoning skill was added to summon creatures to follow you and to kill (or at least attack) other creatures and players.

Some more NPC's for quests or to teach you things.

An NPC, which gives you a present, when you find it, was added.

The website is here: http://www.the-green-leaf.de/tgatb.html

A Forum, where you can talk about the game and ask questions is here: http://tgatb.freeforums.org/client-update-t19.html

If you are interested to help the game, maybe because you are an artist and want to brush up the game artwork, or you are a programmer and want to work on the client, any volunteers are welcome Smiley
