Final Fantasy XII and how it plays like an online MMO.
FFXII and how I didn't give a shit about any of the characters.

The reviews for FFIV14 aren't very flattering. I imagine making an MMO must be a mammoth job, but nowadays you should probably get it to a point where people can actually choose to play it over WoW or something before releasing it.

I hope you meant FFXIV, IV was brilliant; one of the good ones. If SE was smart, they'd release the SaGa 2 DS remake in the US instead of giving us shit that no one knows/cares about like that Four Crystals bullshit or whatever it was. At least SaGa 2 has a cult following here and it's a solid RPG; with the right marketing it would definitely sell.

Braid. Everyone went on about it... I had to quit to dashboard after 3 minutes. ughh.. Couldn't stand it.
That "Wing Commander" game on XBLA... wtf. That was awful.
Sonic 4. Although Sonic Colours is proving to be quite fun! So, maybe that's balanced it out.

I think SquareEnix is realising that western RPGs are becoming increasingly popular, and they don't know how to change their own works to appeal to this changing audience. So in the end they're just flapping their arms wildly shouting quick just make anything! do stuff! change things! stuff! we'll hit our target audience eventually! The last time I was truly enthralled by a FF game was IX.
I dunno why they don't make more things like The World Ends with You.

quick just make anything! do stuff! change things! stuff! we'll hit our target audience eventually! That's what FF13 felt like to me. I think Squeenix's problem is that they desperately try to please both Japanese and Western (mainstream) audiences which, considering how different the console landscape is these days is bound to failure. On that note, I'll never understand how console FPSs could become as popular as they are (in the US at least, Europe is PC-land). I've even heard people arguing that FPSs are better with a controller, which is kinda funny, considering every console FPS has auto-aim to make up for the lack of precision.

I think it depends on the game. More casual, action-oriented shooters are very fun on consoles, because I think the control scheme is well-suited to that - they're not usually very precise games to begin with, and to me the distance from the screen and the relatively simple control setup of consoles is well suited to action games (hard to explain this in a way that makes sense). Things like Thief, though, are better on a PC; I have a hard time playing games that require a lot of patience and precision on a console.

Braid
What exactly about it? I dunno.. I just didn't like it, and everyone had been super-hyping it for ages so I was expecting something amazing... but then I was playing the first level, and I was pissed off at the "feel" of the player movement... I didn't like the look of the graphics (detailed and technically well drawn as they may be), they kinda made me feel awkward and anxious.. I just didn't like the whole vibe or the feel of the gameplay... especially after so much excitement from everyone else, I was kinda just 'meh'.

I thought Braid was overpolished. It was too "flawless" for its good, if that makes any sense.

That's part of it I guess. I'm finding it extremely hard to formulate my opinions on Braid without coming off like a douche who's jealous of its success (which I'm not).

Did you get to any of the time-based puzzles?

completely. i doubt anyone would be jealous of Braid's success....it's about as relevant as being jealous of any Microsoft Games Studio game's success. anything halfway decent with that amount of marketing and press from MS, with a relatively clear week in arcade will do well.. the fact it was marketed as "indie" when it was basically part-funded and published by the biggest software company on the planet helped it even further.... (just read the full credits on MobyGames and look at the backgrounds of all the people involved, too!) Did you get to any of the time-based puzzles? no, but I watched a friend play some of them. It wasn't like I "didn't get it", or missed the point, it's just that I didn't really like it.. I didn't like the look, or feel...or even playing it. it was just a bit annoying..if that makes any sense. especially that bit where when you go left things go backwards in time and when you go right they go forward in ARrrrrrg.. i was watching someone play that and it looked really really tedious..and stressful.

Lets not get into the whole "what is indie" again. It's like this forum is a huge semantics brawl.
