I'm enjoying reading the OT discussion but, since it obviously has legs, would it be worth splitting the thread so the projects can be discussed separately to the factual and political discussion?

What is the benefit of releasing a document that says Dmitry Medvedev "plays Robin to Putin's Batman"?
"Holy oil pipeline Batman, looks like we'll have to silence another journalist."

I just got a great idea for a game, thank you.  Smiley

In all seriousness though, most of what the leaked cables contain (save for the terrorism target stuff) is tabloid-level gossip. To quote Germany's chancellor Angela Merkel, it's the kind of stuff you'd hear on any regular party.

With regards to how important/shocking the most recent leaks have been, they are not the highest security classification (I think it's a fairly low level) and also they have only released a something like 300 of 250,000 cables. So we haven't even seen most of them, not by a long shot  Blink.

I still think asking people to spy on the sec gen of the UN is pretty bad.

That is a great idea! I want to see that.

I'm sorry, but that's simply not true. Only a fraction has been released, and the revelations range from child abuse to governments attempts to stop investigations into torture and human rights abuses to the Chilcot Inquiry being a guaranteed whitewash. Oh, and the murder of children.

I would agree, by the way, with starting a new thread and keeping this one for the games. Now, tell me more about Batman and Robin: Putin Edition.

Operation: Pedopriest, but for this story unveiled by Wikileaks about a Texas company delivering young boys to Afghan police for unsavory purposes.

Still not planning on making it, but this idea just got much easier to implement now that Molleindustria has released the source code to their old projects: http://www.archive.org/details/molleindustria_games_sources

The official website for Wikileaks Stories is now up!

http://www.wikileaks-stories.com

And so is a Facebook page for the project:

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Wikileaks-Stories/174777262542966

Everyone who wants to participate, or is already making a game - why don't you say hi? And let anyone who might be interested in this project know about it.

That's quite the introductory post, bravo!

You guys have convinced me to add a Wikileaks level/sub-plot to my game:

Not quite what you wanted, but here's a link to a Wikileaks game:
http://www.boingboing.net/2010/12/19/cablegate-game-gives.html

Could be a useful resource.

I'd love to see someone do that.

Speaking of molleindustria, they're releasing a Wikileaks Stories game in a few days. How awesome is that?

I thought about doing a game in the style of the gunship/helicopter attack videos we've seen

(DANGER disturbing video)

It should be pretty easy to imitate that style with a simple 2d engine (faking the 2d) maybe mixed with some voxels for the explosions.

I ended up doing that. I called it Operation: Piggyback.

certainly Smiley but there isn't much to say: I wanted to participate in LD48 but nearly missed it. With only 4h to got I knew something simple had to be made.

I took a lot of screenshots from the gunship videos on youtube and looked at those static images to get a feel for what makes them look so military & authentic although they are just black and white.

I managed to create some simple textures, mix them with some real screenshots, pulled the "gun gui" of a video - all that in inkscape (vector graphics editor). i'm usually not very good with graphics but that simple black & white, washed out feel was something i was able to pull off (at least i think so).

once i was content with how it looked I slapped some code together so clicking would drop a bomb and make sound effects. also tanks & infantry are spawned at the border so you have something to bomb.

the whole "game" is only 200 LOC and quiet readable https://gist.github.com/748413

I also used this to promote my javascript library gamejs.org, which i just managed to do again hehe

ps.: artistic angle: there are *so many* snuff videos on youtube. i'm not sure anyone notices that. i sometimes get sick watching them. especially the ones where you can - nearly - see the humans getting blown to pieces. this little game recreates them.

Is it balanced so that it's practically impossible for the hegemony to lose if they're trying at all?  Kind of depressing ...

Perhaps that demonstrates, as Molleindustria write in their foreword, that while whistleblowers are an important part of a functioning democracy, Wikileaks alone can't fix all the problems that exist.

Does anyone have any good links to websites explaining interesting details of the leaks? Wherever I read about them the information is always pretty general.

The Guardian has reports on lots of individual leaks, as well as links back to the relevant reports
