I like how people are quoting messages that are multiple screen sizes in length only to say one word. Big Laff

That's ace! I don't know why, but it reminds me of the kind of cel-shaded style that you'd find in games like Wind Waker. Must be the thick outline. :]

Oh wow, that is awesome. I'd love to see this in motion, if you plan to animate it of course.

Things I Did:

Put shadow under jaw to give it more definition.
...
Gave it some chunkiness. Chunkiness is appealing!

Chunkiness -is- appealing. Does anyone know why this is?

Because it gives it clearer form and volume by separating the piece into recognizable planes.

Such an overwhelming amount of awesome stuff on these last few pages, very inspirational.

I'm trying to find the time to work on actual games, but end up doing small things like this instead:

My friend just started making pixel art in GraphicsGale, he's wondering what he needs to improve on the most!

I listed things like making better palettes, working on cleaner shading and possibly experimenting with dithering..

Those area really solid! He has some superb character design skills and good poses too.

I would say that the first thing that jumps to mind in terms of critique is to use less gradients for shading (which you mentioned already). A simple highlight/midtone/shadow (or even just 2 of the 3), with a determined light source usually looks much nicer. His lighting seems to be coming from straight-on, which can make it look flat.

Using cast shadows on areas like the ones under the clothing folds would also look nice. But he's off to an awesome start!

@kitheif: I feel like I'm saying this a lot lately, but tell your friend to stop banding. That's the biggest problem I see when people are trying out pixel art for the first time. Short of that their colours could use a lot of work. The issues range from things like poor constrast between shades, shading could be better defined through the use of hue shifting, and just poor colour selection in general. Point them towards some colour wheels.

I'm against telling your friend to experiment with dithering because that's asking for a disaster with someone as new as they are. I always recommend learning about pixel clustering because I feel it's an invaluable pixel technique. Unfortunately, I don't have the good tutorial showing off how to do it. If someone else has that handy, a post would be great.

EDIT: Also tell them not to save as jpeg.

hey guys how do i tilt the sword?

@Medevenx: The sword is the least of your problems right now in my opinion. The animation looks stiff and I'd go as far as to say the whole thing needs reworking. I don't understand the concept lately of moving specific pieces of the piece around and saying, "There, it's animated". What happened to drawing each frame out?

EDIT2: I think if you redid the animation frame by frame, it would likely look much better. Xion and Pietepiet are good people to question about animations if you're having trouble.

Here's some of mine.  I'm not terribly experienced, but I think I'm getting the hang of this.  Feedback welcome.

And something I've just started to work on:

@Gabriel Verdon
I agree, he likes to come up with stories and backgrounds for his characters before spriting them, it's pretty cool!
And yeah, I'll get him to checkout some tutorials on here.
@Kramlack
I'll be sure to have him check out those links, and pixel clustering! Thanks!
