A new one of mine, still trying to get a style nailed down. The main things I wanted to work on for this were building an atmosphere and designing a human who would be recognisable as my work. Should maybe upload a bigger version...

I'd love to see a non-JPEG version of this if possible, it's really thrashing the quality of it. Either way, your color choices are very warm.

that + filters overload.

@jamo:
it's really, really pretty. but I don't think I'd call it pixel art per se

Aye, the filters aren't necessarily a bad thing in this case. When I first saw it I was like OH MY GOOOOOOOD Kiss

Depends if you call using different alpha transparencies breaking the rules.

There's no doubt that each pixel is well placed.

He's also using gradients/glows- tools not forcing you to place individual pixels.

I think it's pretty and I like the guy's style, I was just pointing out the parts that made it 'not pure pixel art' by a lot of website's standards.

I like it Jamo, i see u used some filters and maybe brushes but thats fine, works for the piece.

one thing that bugged me the second i saw it was that my eye wanted to travel to the "spikes" hanging from the ceiling. They are solid black almost and really hard NOT to look at.

I think softening them up or even rmeoving them would make the pic more complete.

Hey everyone, sorry I missed the whole conversation about my work, busy with christmas things! I'm really glad you liked the look of it, feeling pretty positive about going forward with this style. Ive been struggling to make something that doesn't look like anyone else's work, especially with the characters.

I'll try and reply to the main points made while I was away.

Gradients + Alpha = not pixel art

Im new to these forums but I've been doing pixel art for a fair amount of time and expected a few calls on this for breaking the rules. To be honest it is still pixel art to me, as each pixel was placed individually and thought about, and I wasn't trying to emulate any console or any other restriction so in my opinion it shouldn't matter really. The fact that I'm breaking a rule that only people in the know will really care about is less important to me than making something that everyone can enjoy (this might be the wrong place to say that!!)

Filters + highlights

This is something I was in two minds about but, I should clear up the process I went through to make it. Firstly it was done as a 128 X 256 pixel art piece with no filters, highlights etc, then I increased the size and added filters after on the light thingies and a bit of texture on the flat colours. It may be worth me posting it again without those added so you can all see how it was before.

Ceiling spikes - I agree, these shouldn't be there.

Thanks for the input everyone, I'm glad I joined up into the forum, looks like it will be a lot of help, Ill try to repay the favour and take what I'm learning into account!

EDIT
Here is the image with no filters!

It's fun to see what you can fit in 16 squared pixels. Limitations are fun.

Ah thanks, I did think I might be thrown out for that!
