Hey everyone, hope you all had a good christmas. This is an animation test that I did to go with the character that I posted before, some of you might recognise him!

Hey everyone, hope you all had a good christmas. This is an animation test that I did to go with the character that I posted before, some of you might recognise him! the first animation looks terrible compared to the other brilliant frames. (the feet looks bad in idle form, and it seems cheap for him to breathe like that when he got super smooth animations when running and slashing away)

Also a glaring discrepancy between the "slash" and "slice" animations: the sword looks an order of magnitude heavier in the first. His entire frame looks bigger too.

Oh man these are beautiful, but as Cellusious said, the first one is pretty simple compared to the other. But I love your style, it looks very superbrothers-ish.

I really like the slash one, the sword has a lot of weight.
In the slice one, try making the second hit in the opposite direction, like he's swinging the sword back and forth. Right now it does the job, but feels a bit unnatural to me.

Thanks everyone, I was watching Rise of Planet of the Apes, sorry! I always seem to come back to loads of comments I missed. I'll try to reply as needed! In the slice one, try making the second hit in the opposite direction, like he's swinging the sword back and forth. Right now it does the job, but feels a bit unnatural to me.
I know what you mean, I had some issues making the slashes flow, this might be why! Prince of Persia(probably not - I'm such a noob). BUT YOUR ANIMATIONS ARE TOP-NOTCH Nah hes just a made up character, not sure who. And thanks, glad you like it! the first animation looks terrible compared to the other brilliant frames. (the feet looks bad in idle form, and it seems cheap for him to breathe like that when he got super smooth animations when running and slashing away)
Yeah I kind of didn't make an idle animation, I wasn't sure what to have him do. I just added that so it didn't look quite so static, so I know its pretty bad. I should have made that clear really.. If you have any ideas about what action to give him then I could give it a shot.

Lots of people seem to make idle animations because they think they have to, even when the scale doesn't really allow for a good one, and it just ends up resembling nothing except maybe a weird dance.
One thing you can do is give him some random small "bored" animations that play after a few inactive seconds, if you absolutely think he'll feel too static standing still (I don't think he will).

This is a very good point, where were you when I was drawing! Maybe I should replace the idle animation with a 'bored' animation, could be interesting, he could sharpen his sword, or read a map or something.

You could just have his clothes or hair moving slightly in the wind. When he is walking at 1 pixel a frame his stomach is much bigger than when he is walking fast a 3 pixel a frame. He looks better with the slim frame I think, as he looks a bit chunky in the first animation with the thick torso and shoulders against the thin arms and legs.

@Jamo - I like the animations as well - they're pretty well-done and smooth. However, I agree with Schoq. The sword looks really heavy in the first "slash" animation, and comes off more as a "hack". In the five-pixel run animation, the character seems wider than the 3-pixel one, as well.
