a roguelike rhythm game called Crypt of the NecroDancer. Have you worked in a reference to Michael Jackson's Thriller yet?

it requires a better understanding of skeletal systems; to make the learning easier i'd recommend doing the animations in stick figure/wireframe roughs first before filling them out; saves you a lot of time and repositioning
This ^ I would also recommend taking a look at the book The Animator's Survival Kit. It's a great book and you can learn a lot from it even if you aren't an experienced animator (at least I did).

Single color animations are a bit of a challenge, but I'm having fun figuring this out.

Thank you all for the helpful tips and sources, Iv'e been meaning to study animation. The only problem right now is that this commission's deadline is in seven days and that's not enough time to study all of this. I can only try though, wish me luck.

I tried improving the 1-bit animation from earlier, adding more frames and changing others to make it look more smooth and dynamic. I think the leg on the left could kick back a tiny bit when he's looking to the side, but I'm not sure. Anyone care to share advice?
