The wings stay above the body he whole time, twitching rather than flapping. You can find frames of actual birds in flight on the Internet.

From the looks of it: no reference
it's like you just winged it haha oh man
2clever4me Yeah, I didn't use a reference at all. I probably should have though.

Now that I look at it, there seems to be one more frame that I could have added where the wing goes lower than the rest of the bird's body. I know there are plenty of references to be found on the internet, I actually spend most of my time watching videos about birds. Which is why it's surprising that my animation came out so shitty.

Don't kick yourself over it, understanding the movement of an animal from just seeing it in real time is really really hard. Try to find a series of stills or some slow motion footage instead.

Early foray into this weird "drawing with tiny boxes" thing, featuring a billion colors.

@RopeDrink - make a workshop thread, listen to people's feedback, and put in the time to get better. easy peasy Sounds good - I'm new to the site so I currently just sit in the art section for now while doodling. I'll have to look up more tutorials and probably consider one of the threads you mentioned. On a seperate note, sat down for 30mins trying to come up with ideas, didn't succeed, but doodled another pile of garbage that is a) incomplete and now b) in the bin. @Blambo, thats some nice work

Any better? well, it don't look like a bird reasons: -the tail is wrong. birds don't have tails, they have tail feathers. -birds with short wings like that either employ high-aspect ratio flight which is high speed, and glidey or they pump their wings in an elliptical pattern to get lift on both the up and downstroke.

I'm brand new to animation. Feel free to tell me what I'm doing wrong.
You need some follow through. You need to be able to feel the push of the wing through the air. The work, the energy expended. It's still pretty good for being new to animation. A few tweaks and it will be great.

I really think it's important to be intimately familiar with Newtonian mechanics when you're an animator. Which doesn't mean understanding the equations as much as intuitively getting the concepts, so that when you're looking at something in motion you "feel" the weight, momentum, etcetera, and more specifically . (Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Newtonian physics should be slavishly followed, but it helps if you understand the rules of physics that you're )
