also the base of the tail should follow the motion of the spine and pelvis, and each section of tail could sort of whip for a nice secondary motion

Two bitmap fonts: Curses/code page 437 (compatible with Dwarf Fortress) This one follows Windows alt codes which is a slight variant of 437 I think

Very tasty stuff! The colors are very rich but I agree the dithering is somewhat distracting. While we are posting gameboy related stuff...

No idea why the birds became blurry on the last mockup, basicly just copied them from one project to another, here a sharper version: i'll probably go with white outlines, as i plan to do dark levels (not a mockup, just a quick test to see how readable the character is on a dark background):
