My first sprite in a while, it's pretty shaky.  I think I overdid the sel-out.

Not bad, better than I can do. Things that could be better:
1. The outline is a too sparse. Makes it look unfinished.
2. This may have been your intention, but the right side (our left) of her head looks shaved. The hair should be more forward if you didn't have that intention.
3. She looks really tense, mostly in her stance and clenched fists, but her face looks relaxed and happy to me.

That's a pretty great reference, thanks!  The only thing is that I don't want to make my sprites too big (although it might make it easier to animate, now that I think about it).

There's absolutely no reason to do "selout" unless your sprite is always going to be against a dark background (or needs to blend in with cps3 capcom fighter sprites) because what you're doing is basically antialiasing towards darkness.

It was a Pixelation forums fad ten years ago and the people who identified it and pushed it as technique that makes sense (mostly tsugumo) have since admitted it was silly.

At this point it's basically deprecated (as much as something can be in art)

The only reason I really did it was because I was trying to make outlines that didn't look insanely thick on a character of that resolution.  I'm just going to bump up the sprite size.

Pixel artists discover line weight -- come up with a bizarre explanation for it -- reject it.

it's not line weight, it's literally just making outlines look less jaggy against a dark bg (and accentuating the jaggies against light)

I more meant sub-pixel detail (like making her upper arm slightly thicker).  But yeah it looks pretty bad.
