A font I did. each individual character is 7x7, meant to be assembled on an 8x8 grid. It's meant to look very alien and uncomfortable, but still be readable. the dutch brown fox jumps door the lazy dog

This would be hell to play dwarf fortress with, hahah. Could use some refining, especially towards readability.

Wow, jwaap, share some of that talent with me. Everything you do is dripping with style and class. Sticky, creamy style and class. Right, anyway. More birds-eye meanderings:

@Kevin It looks great, but I have a personal insanity moment when people make sprites using a retro NES style yet use more than 4 colors inc. transparency in a graphic.

Why on earth would get upset about that? The reason to choose that style is not because of technical reasons, but because it looks good. If you figure out a way to get it to look even better, why wouldn't you?

@Kevin It looks great, but I have a personal insanity moment when people make sprites using a retro NES style yet use more than 4 colors inc. transparency in a graphic. ha ha fair enough. I love the NES with all my heart, but god damn it's sprites are restrictive. The gun and backpack were unreadable without that 4th colour, so I figured I'd fudge it and claim he was made of multiple sprites (à la megaman). Why on earth would get upset about that?
It actually bugged me a bit when I did it. It's a small defeat for a me, not being able to make it look right and keep it within the imposed limits. Mostly though, yeah, I try to go with what I think looks good. It's just when doing nes graphics, staying within the limits makes it look more authentic and in turn, better (in my mind). But the retro feel stayed in tact I think so I'm happy.

Can't one use a second layer of sprites in order to make such graphics even on the NES restrictions? Didn't they have to do that in order to make megaman's face flesh-toned? made of multiple sprites (à la megaman).
Aaaaand ofcourse I missed this until AFTER I posted

Right, anyway. More birds-eye meanderings: Very, very nice. Though I think the grass would be better if it was somewhat lighter, and the dirt next to the pond kind of stands out with that dithering. Maybe a bit less would do the trick? Like, if you only did it near the edges towards the grass and pond, but not in the middle. It's a bit noisy now. The tree is my favourite. Really cool!

Fully agree with both points. I was trying to get a decent texture on the dirt, make it nice and gritty looking, but went over board. It could be turned down several notches. The grass I blame on the NES palette I'm using. It was, essentially, a choice between what I used and that funky chartreuse that I used for the lighter blades under the tree. The light green is so bright that I'm pretty sure looking at a screenful of it is actually the leading cause of eye cancer, but I'd have to check with my doctor to be sure. I might drop the NES palette, or at least "tweak" it to better suit my needs. It's just so damned nostalgic.
