okay heres a new look, thats more in tune with the original designs. i couldnt get that to work joshg.. and i think part of the reason im doing this is only because i like color so much.. and i think if used tastefully it could bring something to the game. could be wrong though Yeah, that makes sense. The monochrome idea was just a quick compromise idea between straight B&W and color. Even monochrome adds something depending on the color used, plus using a mix of high-saturation and low-saturation. But if it doesn't look good, it doesn't look good. I like the new color choices. The lighter colors makes the whole thing feel ... simpler, in a good way, if that makes sense?

): well.. i think one of the things.. about it.. is that it was never supposed to be horrific. like, all the gloom and grime thats indicitive of the genre.. is simply impossible to create effectively on a small scale that reads. in addition.. like, how i feel it should work is that there is like a contrast(?) between that happenings in the game and the visual look of it. sorry i dissapoint, but i suppose i cant please everyone. @inane, i accually really like your color choices there, @everyone. im not posting anything TSH related anymore, i think. thank you for the feedback though (:

Don't try to please everyone anyway; we'll all have different opinions, and in the end it's your choice that matters. Heck, mostly I made suggestions only because I'm trying to get better with color and palette choices myself, not because I think I've got The Right Answer.

Dear joshg,
When you randomly capitalize things in the end of a sentence, like "The Right Answer" and "Super Good Thing", I get weird products like laundry detergents and games and whatnot in my head, and I feel the need to photoshop them. It's annoying and awesome at the same time.
Thanks, Hideous

Those tend to be conventions used by software developers and passed along through the ages. "A Good Thing" wasn't a Martha Stewart original, she stole that from us. If you want a more authoritative list of jargon, I suggest: http://catb.org/jargon/html/frames.htmlCheers, --Zack

eep! Everytime I comment on something of Annabelle's it seems I seem to come of as critical. D: I'm not trying to be critical. I'm not saying it's a bad thing. I wasn't dissappointed. It's not a bad thing at all. I'm not dissappointed. I was just commenting, you know? Just pointing out something I'd noticed, you know? And also, Don't try to please everyone anyway your game, do what you want. You've got the first and final say in the whole process. And also, like, all the gloom and grime thats indicitive of the genre.. is simply impossible to create effectively on a small scale that reads.
Well, imho, it's not the detail that makes something scary or ominous, it's the atmosphere. A couple games that manage to have creepy atmospheres with tiny characters are Acaban and Knytt. And you know that one screen you posted, one of the first ones, with the b&w and it was all dark around her, and someone mentioned grue? Yeah, that had an awesome atmosphere. I'm not saying the whole game should be like that, I'm just saying...Oh, poo. Please don't take this the wrong way, I really like the stuff I really do. It's ridiculous awesome. Do what you want. ignore me. erm...Think I'll shutup nao.

Even if you go with colors, your black and white sprite will forever stride defiantly above your Curly avatar.
Also, I agree that what usually makes a setting more unnerving/scary/whathaheckever is the atmosphere that's created. The little details can help with that, but they aren't completely necessary.
However I also like the idea of having a visual look that contrasts with the happenings in the game. It's practically a fetish of mine (no, not that way, you pervs) to see kiddy-like characters put into horrific situations. It's actually something I have planned for one of my projects.
Though that one also has floating islands and mermaids, so hey.
