here is a stupid little 2 panel comic I made to practice pixeling.

feedback welcome, if you can spare a moment

That's really nice, maybe shade the guys head like the ant too? (just an idea)

@Will Vale - yeah the ships neck looks much more solid now, engine surround too. I think I preferred how the old engine jets seemed like they were coming from the inside of the engine block.

I prefer the engine jets on the old one, the animation looks more like the ship is boosting. Other than that, everything else is an improvement. Nice work! Smiley

I really like the muted palette, the stylised ground and clouds, and the glint on the sword. I'd be tempted to lose the highlight & shadow on the background rocks in panel 2 and on the left of panel 1 to push them further away. At the moment they have more contrast than some of the foreground elements.

I've been tweaking the spaceship I posted earlier during odd moments this week, I'm much happier with it now:

BEFORE:

AFTER:

I've tried to make the back and neck feel more solid, reworked various details, and cleaned up some of the messier bits. I also added a big beam laser turret. Maybe a bit too big since there were supposed to be two originally! The VFX are just a quick experiment, I think the beam would be more animated in game but it's tedious doing the animation in Photoshop...

Here's the 24-bit image as well, since the GIF is a bit grainy.

Cheers,

Will

Is it really pixel art?  Noir
I asked that the first time I posted it. It's the right size to be a background ship in a shoot-em-up but the style is very un-pixelly. Except perhaps the metallic bits which were drawn as individual pixels. Quite happy to put this stuff elsewhere, assuming I do more

Hmm. I think I maybe agree. The reason I added the nozzles was to reinforce the nozzles on the front section and make it look more like it was an independent ship. I guess we'll see when it's set up how the final vfx might look, which might well mean removing the nozzles again.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions.

That's sad that there's no proper thread to post non pixel-art sprites Sad

Put it in the art thread, then! I don't think I'd consider it pixel art but that doesn't make it not awesome. Grin

Oh my god this is so bad my first sprite
NEED ADVICE

1- First, let's resize this guy. What is he? Looks like a cat?
2- WHAT IN THE FLYING FUCK
3- This technique, where you put a shadow immediately next to an outline or other line, is called "banding" and is generally frowned upon in pixel art. You're trying to create a shadow in order to more clearly define your sprite's shape here, but all banding does is soften the outline of the sprite and make everything look smudgy and weird.
4- So to start, let's just get rid of it.
5- Mr. Cat is looking better already! But the blockiness of the pixels that make up his outline is even more apparent now, so how do we solve that?
6- Here's an example of a blocky line like the ones making up Mr. Cat's outlines.
7- By placing a gradient color in places where more subtle curves should appear (the technique is called "anti-aliasing"), the line looks a bit smoother.
8- But applying anti-aliasing to all of the rougher edges of Mr. Cat isn't easy, because he's kind of large.
9- Here's my attempt. Basically, try to work on a smaller level if you can. It makes it much easier to fool the viewer's eyes into thinking an outline is smooth, and it's also easier to pack more detail into the sprite since there's not as much area to focus on.
