I need a name for this style of character drawing, like an overall brand.  I don't want to call them 'chibi' either because that brings to mind waaay too much of the bad side of THE INTERNET.
'Bantam Cadre' perhaps?

For such a low res sprite I think that looks pretty good.  I bet if you just swapped the pure black for something else (like extremely dark maroon) it would round out the whole thing some more.
