The closing animation works really well because it snaps shut, then eases into the closed chest with a little stretch.
The opening doesn't feel as powerful to me because it's just a reverse of the close. I'd add a little bounce when it flies open too, to ease out of the snap-to-open.

...with a quick tweaky-tweak.
His top/back is a bit iffy still. Leg lighting a bit twitchy too.

I'd like to know why so many people make bipedal things pivot that drastically. Almost no one walks with that much gangster-ness/swagger in the their movement.

Unless I and close to everyone else I've seen walks wrong. But then again, I live in America.

You are right - the poor thing would end up with terrible neck ache in reality.

With this robot, before it had no swing and it looked too rigid to me, so I over-exaggerated I think because it is a cartoony looking robot (and this helps give it more character for something that is just 16x16).

Also its quite slow, so a swagger seems to suit it. If it were running fast then it would make sense to tilt the head down and give it very little turning if any.

Hope that explains a bit how it ended up.

In a nutshell, pixel art is about exaggeration. Nothing is to proportion. You exaggerate things selectively to convey the shapes and movements you want to convey.

Ergo, swagger for walks. Also exaggerated hand motion.

also i like to imagine the legs are connected to a bar, which at the midpoint is bolted to the hull, allowing it to pivot the legs
