@Strife: As others have unanimously said, right. The way the shading near the ear can be taken as shading of the hair or of the ear (it blends) seems really nice to me. @Medevenx: Bottom wins it for me since I'm not feeling the change between the light and dark tiles in the center. If it was less abrupt, I'd probably like the top one more. It might be worth looking into Monster Tale tiles since that seems to be the direction you're going in.

Could I please get some feedback on these pixels and the current layout? Working on a small shmup over the weekend, and I wanted to get input as I move along. The pink squares are lives. The green squares are lives. This is from the game, not a mockup! Things I need to add still: background, score, player's current level.

The color scheme & the blocky look of the right panel are excellent. The ships are horrible, redraw them if you can. I'd redraw them in the blocky style of the panel & with some perspective: but there are of course very many possibilities here. I don't like the health bars either. Imo health bars, especially in simple games like this, are an excellent fit for experimental eye-candy that does not disrupt the other gui elements, but if that's not your thing, then at least make their position within the panel feel more "stable" & less arbitrary:

I think the enemies should have outlines too, but I like the graphical style. Nice job.

Dredmor, huh? Never heard of it. Soot-spewing samurai swings swords swiftly. I find the crab absolutely stunning. Galloping... turnip? That's just silly.

The main character for the platformer I'm working on, Great Destiny Man. Deranged samurai-esque warrior. Scaled up

I'm going to guess that's remotely related to Sexualobster's Great Destiny Man of the same design
