Also, I think Scott Pilgrim is a bad example in this case.

A much better example would be the Capcom megaman games which even simulated sprite limits, lol. I did mention that didn't I? (can't scroll and find it, already spent more time than I can afford here)

While I agree with you in a way on this, especially since Capcom has the money to put into better resources, I hate when people apply this to indie developers.

My main isssue is that indie developers don't usually have the backing that Capcom does, and it doesn't seem like a cost effective idea to use super high quality art in an indie game. Especially teams of one or two people. A lot of indie games are huge risks on individuals (rather than the risk to large companies with mainstream games), and spending 3 years on a game with amazing art could be catastrophic (not finishing, wasting 2 more years on an unsuccessful game, etc.) compared to 1 year development with some decent pixel art.

The time is just an approximation though, but I think you get the idea.

It's kind of funny that I've actually read this whole topic. A little pathetic too.

What do you mean? The bulk of content in both games is the level design.

knytt is a mechanical gam with repetitive tiles vs seiklus where it's always unique and also the world design is a lot more organic and memorable. i'll just say that seiklus has "substance"

i dont really care platforming wise theyr both boring in that aspect

This is exactly the point though -- if indies are held to a lower critical standard, that standard becomes accepted more generally and Capcom can do it as well.  And if people accept the cheaper-to-produce stuff as equal, that's what the market will give them.

That said, I don't think there's anything wrong with trying to find more efficient methods for game development.  If you can create something people love using a playful and easy art style, that's great.  Just please don't ask critics to give you a pass because of a label you've given yourself.

perhaps this thread's greatest achievement, among its many achievements, is the rebirth of super joe as superb joe

also, earlier i gave sinclair advice to ignore guitar_mobster's trolling, but the same thing can also work in reverse, breadcultist: you don't have to reply to sinclair either, you know. if a post is devoid of serious content, you can just as easily treat it as if that post does not exist. it'd clutter up the thread less to have more posts about genre, games, etc. and less about people elaborating on the character flaws in other people. the ancient greeks solved this problem 2500 years ago: the sophists held that the first person to insult the other in an argument instead of giving a proper response is the loser in any argument.
