I find genres are useful for giving a frame of reference, but it's best to be loose with them and not get hung-up on semantics.

Coming from the drum'n'bass scene, which has been a massive part of my life, it sort of saddened me to see things increasingly carved up.  I think coining jungle in the first place was great, because it really had evolved far enough away from house.  Drum'n'bass was an unnecessary term that stuck, initially used to differentiate from the ragga element in jungle.  Then it split into jump-up, techstep, liquid funk was then coined, lately minimal d'n'b, clownstep(!)... etc.  It just serves to make everything so niche that in the end the scene couldn't support certain of the niches, and those people stopped making music.

If every piece of music ever made fit neatly into a single genre, I'd agree with you.

That's what we have fusion genres for! :D

Really though, you make good points and I guess what I support isn't "using really specific genres" so much as "not being immediately dismissive of someone else using specific genres to decribe a song".

Hehe, that one year of musicology sure paid off.  Cheesy

But seriously, I can't recommend studying musicology to anyone. For the most part it doesn't really have anything to do with music at all and is dreadfully boring. And that's not just my experience either, most of my musician friends who started taking musicology course quit relatively quickly for much the same reasons as me.

Red Dead Redemption is a completely broken and unfun game, with awfully boring writing.

Space Funeral is vastly overrated.

^ I feel like it had so much potential, though!
Its atmosphere and soundtrack is great, the NPC lines are done well..
And although it's really simplistic, the fights are charming enough and don't get in the way of the game world at all.

But I feel like a much more substantial story could be told with these elements. Some of the battle portraits for enemies passed the line from "appropriately strange and dirty" to "amateurish". And the ending sort of betrayed the game.

What're your reasons?

In other news, Little Big Planet is really underwhelming as a platformer. I think someone's mentioned it before. But not many 3D sidescrolling games feel right to me.

I never understood why could play between two perspectives. It's so hard to interpret depth correctly.

I love sequels and I hope they never stop doing them for my favorite series. There's no reason to, we can have great new games and great sequels.

I think this works alright with games, but pretty rarely with, say, films. Unless the sequel was obviously part of the plan from the beginning.

Which perfectly fits my dislike for film-wannabe games   Smiley

I agree.

I thought Inception was awfully corny. I enjoyed it, but every time I watch it I just want to giggle every time they talk about dreams. Especially the scene where they talk about "unconstructed dreamspace filled with raw infinite subconcious". It's just so fucking silly I can't help but laugh.

Don't see how that's controversial. It's the common opinion of most people I know

(Vordhosbn <3)

As for Inception, yeah, it's goofy. It's also sorta like a classic caper/adventure pulp novel. You can't help but be drawn in despite the cheesiness

Yeah Inception I totally agree about Inception. My thoughts are basically summed up in an Xzibit meme macro I saw. Xzibit is like "yo dawg I heard you liek dreams so we put a dream in your dream..." and Leonardo is super serious looking and says "GO DEEPER".

Inception does get points for Leo's quickscoping though.

Actually, speaking of the Matrix, did anyone else like Equilibirum? The one with Christian Bale. I thought that one was even sillier than the Matrix in terms of combat, but I thought it had pretty decent writing and the message was nice.

Also, I think Lord of the Rings trilogy is terrible and The Hobbit is about a zillion times better.

noticing the mention of batman: brave bold earlier, must also express displeasure with. I like srs superheroes. Not fond at all of the earlier superhero comics and media which b&b seems to take cues from. Not to say can't be funny, but don't like silly.

I think the Burton Batmans are awful. Sure, they look good compared to the Schumacher films (particularly the-film-that-shall-not-be-named), but they're fairly awful on their own merits. The first one always freaks me out because the Joker is pretty much the good guy, despite being a freaky psychopath. At least he did something, unlike Keaton's Batman, who acted like a weird humourless robot the whole time.

this so much. i liked keaton as bruce wayne, but he was a terrible batman. on top of that, jack nicholson wasn't very scary and it overall had a weird feeling, like it was trying to be a dark serious movie but wasn't willing to let go of the comic book goofiness like the nolan movies.

Really? Honestly I mostly said that to hear what other people thought of that album because I know it got some lukewarm reviews when it came out.
