I too am surprised terrorists don't do more.
But I don't think it is a conspiracy so much.
It can be difficult to organize and manage people, especially in secret.
I don't think there are a lot of 'intelligent' people who are motivated enough to commit effective terrorist actions.  Many people in the US are complacent, at least for now.

I tend to agree with Alec.  I hadn't thought that conspiracy theories are too optimistic, but that sounds about right.  I think conspiracy theorists give proposed conspirators too much undeserved credit.

Something believers of conspiracy theories forget is that these large governments (like the US) and corporations are owned/managed by people and consists of people.  Many of largest corporations, like Monsanto, Boeing, Exon-Mobil, Google, Microsoft, etc are public companies where the majority of the owners are the public.  There are literally millions of American firefighters, cops, teachers, bankers, doctors, lawyers, grocery store baggers, union workers, etc who have a stake in these companies.

I think that there are many factors that help to determine companies and government actions.  I don't think these large organizations are well enough controlled, organized, disciplined and unaffected by the environment to be masterfully controlled and manipulated by a few.  I think these governments and corporations are human, thus they make mistakes, don't know what is best and are generally unaware of the world.

This isn't to say that companies like Monsanto don't try to patent genes, US starting wars over money, etc.  Just that I wouldn't say it is a few individuals or organizations that cause this.  I think a lot of these organizations and governments are largely responding to and reflecting society (and many other factors too).

Here are some conspiracies (I don't necessarily agree/believe/discredit these, just listing them):

The Russia was a puppet of the US.  During the Cold War Russia was made to look like a super-power to justify many of the US government's actions.  Including making Nukes and gaining additional power.

US War in Iraq may have been started because: Saddam Hussein lost his usefulness (not selling oil at acceptable prices) and to take control of Iraq's Poppy fields (cell Heroine to Russia).

As time continues population increases and technology improves.  So there is a better chance that you are in a sort 'Matrix' emulating this century than this being real.

US is sucking dry all the other oil producing countries while preserving their own supplies.  That way the US will be the last nation to run out of oil.

Peak oil will soon happen.
