This usually doesnt get as much attention as the main competition but there are a lot of cool games this year. Here's the list from http://igf.com/2011/01/2011_independent_games_festiva_12.html. e7 (Gymnasium Koniz Lerbermatt) Fract (University of Montreal) GLiD (Bournemouth University) Octodad (DePaul University) PaperPlane (ENJMIN) Solace (DigiPen Institute of Technology) Tiny and Big (School of Arts and Design Kassel) Toys (Future Games Academy)

This is one of the best student showcase's I've ever seen All of these games are fantastic (except I haven't played GLiD but from the screenshots it looks nice) and three* of them were made in unity

The production quality on these is amazing, it seems to get better every year. Makes sense since these game devs schools are usually training grounds for AAA studios, I know Digipen students end up in the various game studios around here or MGS. The teams for the student games also seem to be getting larger, at least from what I've seen talking to people at GDC.

As an aside, it mentions that Anthony Carboni (of Bytejacker) will be hosting the award show. Which is pretty funny, since he spectacularly missed the previous two GDCs.
He should be a really good host, though. He's a lot of fun to watch.

and paul, it's a bit silly to root for a game based on what it was created in. although i know you have a big gay soft-spot for game maker.

I was terribly surprised when I walked into school this morning and a couple of friends started congratulating me. But since then it's been a great day, I've been walking on clouds.
So psyched to go to SF and hopefully meet the most awesome indie devs and artists!

I made Toys. It's a small little game right now but hopefully by IGF I can show of some interesting new content. Music is getting an overhaul as well by a talented musician friend of mine whom I'll be working alongside for the overseeable future.

It's a little sad I guess, but a good first visual impression is often important. Screenshots and videos of a game are usually the very first thing people see before they even start considering trying a demo. If there was a good way to give a first impression focused more on gameplay...

Heh, the IGF version have even worse art (the IGF screenshot show the very first version... stupid me to enter IGF that early, if I waited more I would have newer screenshot!)
But I don't expected to win for several reasons...
And if I won I would have to decline anyway (Because I cannot travel to GDC, the 500 USD monies they give to help is useless to me, the air fare alone is 2000+ )
The winners look great (dunno if they play great...)
