Do you like teaming up with a buddy to conquer that evil alien boss or does your buddy need some conquering of his/her own? Feel free to provide examples!
Personally, I generally like having a friend on my side when I take down the enemy hordes. Probably the most prominent co-op experience in my mind is Life Force.

The best is when there is one team vs other team.

I usually prefer purely cooperative games. Team vs team still tend to create some animosity, and I'd rather be helped than targeted if I'm a beginner.

I love cooperative games, though nobody seems to be developing them for PC. Upon saying that however, there are a few coming out soon - Portal 2 and Hunted: The Demons Forge spring to mind.

I have played coop since unreal and gary's mode for HL1, I love competitive and teams, but coop is the best. there's nothing like blasting your way through a dark singleplayer level with other humans

I enjoy co-op stuff like New SMB Wii or DKC Returns if the game is fun and challenging, but nothing gets me more engaged and riled up than a fierce versus style game; L4D2, Mario Kart, and Super Smash Bros are all top notch. I voted for both.

My favorite is co-op with a competitive element, a la Zelda Four Swords (a game more people should play) and Diablo 2 multiplayer. Lots of arcade games (and L4D) do that as well, i.e. cooperative but competing for score, but FS and D2 use more advanced systems.

Both are fun in different ways. Co-op with competitive elements can be pretty fun, too... really, multiplayer of any type floats my boat (not to mention it's responsible for about 90% of the gaming I do anymore).

Both, really. Last night a friend came and we played tons of Tekken 6 (competitive) and Spelunker HD (co-op), I don't think I enjoy one experience more than the other.

I love both, but often prefer cooperative, seeing as my wife is so non-competetive co-op is the only multiplayer she's willing to play. I can see what she means, working together is generally more fun than fighting each other, as there's no hard feelings for either player.
