hum...jealousy ? Like you said yourself anyone can set up a project on 8bitfunding, so that doesn't make a whole lot of sense.  Facepalm

And no I'm not annoyed at people donating for his cause, I just don't think his cause makes sense because with or without the 6000$ the project could still be done.
Just a question btw, tametick how much money many have you saved, more or less ?

Around 10k, JackieJay.

Not sure what the exact amount is because I still need to pay some taxes for 2010 income.

mmh honestly if you want my opinion I'd save some more or make smaller flash games and try to make some profit out of them, even with that money you'll be lucky to last more than 4 or 5 months. Does your partner have a wife ? If so does she have a stable job?

CQ is at a point where I think 4 or 5 months is more than what we will require (I am thinking and hoping we can finish it in less than 2 months of full-time work, but it's not always easy to estimate those things).

If it *does* end up taking us >5 months (which I think is highly unlikely) we'll go back to contracting and working part time. But I am hoping and believing it will not come to that.

But with the $6000 the project will most likely be done quicker, at a higher quality, and the developers won't have to compromise their lifestyle as much. Do you fear that this project will take money away from other more "deserving" projects?

I was personally just a bit worried that the OP was getting a bit too excited about too little money. Depending on the local cost of living, $6k is not a lot of money for 2 and a family to live on for very long. He explained that he had thought it out more than it originally sounded, so I'll leave it at that.

I'll reiterate that I think this is a great idea that I hope catches on and works. Even for people that work on a game in their spare time, it gives them money to be able to hire people that have talents that complement their own.

This game is no longer listed as having the $1000 donation, which seems peculiar.
Did the donor withdraw, or were you unable to fulfil the pledge offer? Did you have to pay the paypal fee to refund him?

It's a bug:

i imagine most of the people here arguing that he shouldn't be asking for $6000 or that he should save more or whatever probably aren't going to donate anyway, so i don't see what they are asking questions for -- it won't change their mind and make them want to donate if he answers the right questions or something, and it won't change his mind and make him stop asking for the $6000 if you make enough posts saying that it's a bad idea. just think of it as sort of a way to offer pre-sales of the game before the game is out, rather than a charity. that's usually how projects like this work: people donated to my kickstarter project not out of the kindness of their heart, but because i offered nice perks/rewards for doing so: for instance, a free copy of every game i ever make in my life for $50.

anyway, i do wish i could donate something as the premise of this game looks good but i'm extremely lacking in money right now. i did what i could though (retweeted his request for instance, and gave him advice on the game trailer).

Yeah, it was not a pleasant moment when I first noticed it. In fact I believe it was already at $1815 when he wrote that.

Wow! I'm glad it's okay!

8bitfunding really needs to start fixing some of the many, many, problems with their website. I realise it's only been a few days, but the site doesn't look like it was ready to launch and is giving a very poor first impression to what is a very legitimate funding.

Tametick, do you think the support for your game has come from your own established userbase or is it thanks mostly to 8bitfunding's marketing effort and presentation of your project? Do you think you would have done more poorly through Kickstarter (had it been an option)?

That's already in the works- Geoff have recently hired a new developer to replace the original one, which apperantly was just not up to the task:

I suspect it is the former since it appears the other games on the site are not doing as well, but I can't tell for sure of course. Probably a mix of both.

Do you think you would have done more poorly through Kickstarter (had it been an option)?

It hasn't been an option since kickstarter is US-only and I am in Europe (I believe we have actually met in person in BIGJam 2009).

Har!

After Adobe used a post from my blog as marketing material yesterday, Brian Rinaldi ("Web Community Manager for Flash Platform at Adobe") donated $50 to Cardinal Quest:

"I just helped fund Cardinal Quest via 8bit Funding to help create Flash & mobile versions of their HTML5 game prototype http://bit.ly/fLq8ZV" --http://twitter.com/remotesynth/status/30277904914976768

Tametick - oh, awesome! I didn't recognise you from the blue at sign! :D Hi again!
My question was mostly if kickstarter had been available, it's a hypothetical question. Smiley

Glad to hear they've identified the problems with the site. Similarly, a little more transparency on the front of the site would be good when it gets fixed. Shame that it launched in an unfinished and unprofessional state, but at least Geoff is being straightforward with the topic.
